Related: About this forumTrump panders to evangelical leaders by promising to force store clerks to say ‘Merry Christmas’
Donald Trump greeted religious right leaders by asking not what Christianity could do for them but boasting about what evangelical voters had done for him.
Christianity, I owe so much to it in so many ways, through life, through having incredible children, through so many other things, Trump said. But I also owe it, frankly, from standing here because the evangelical vote was mostly gotten by me. If you remember, I went to South Carolina, and I was going to be beaten very heavy evangelical state and I was going to be beaten by (Sen. Ted) Cruz or somebody because he had very strong with the evangelicals (vote), and I ended up getting massive majorities on the evangelical vote. Everybody said, Whats going on? How did Trump do that? And then I went elsewhere and, and I won the whole South and heavy evangelical and Christian vote, and frankly, a Jewish vote, right, where we had Jewish population.
Trump launched a broadside in the so-called war on Christmas Tuesday afternoon at the event organized by the anti-LGBT groups Family Research Council, Vision America and AFA Action.
Im a tremendous believer, and were going to straighten it out, Trump said. You know, oftentimes at some of my rallies Ill have 25,000 (or) 35,000 people more, and I say in a joking fashion but boy, do I mean it, were going to be saying Merry Christmas again.

(31,823 posts)Full stop. Unless someone is holding a gun to my head . . . Is that his plan? Have his insane cult stand over store clerks and point a gun at them while they do their job?
He's a disgusting maggot.

(748 posts). . . so maybe he "clarifies" it there, but I didn't see anything in the quoted passages where Trump actually does say that he will "force" store clerks to say "Merry Christmas." That appears to be something of an inference of the person characterizing Trump's remarks.
That said, that's really neither here nor there, as far as I am concerned. It's difficult to follow the man's babbling, quasi-incoherent way of speaking. About all one can extract from his remarks is that he is attempting to communicate some truly repugnant ideas.
As a believer myself, I find Trump repulsive . . . but not nearly so repulsive as those confessing Christians who purport to support him.

That's what Trump is. He loves violence and bullying. He's shown us time and again . ..

I actually had a lady yell "MERRY CHRISTMAS" to me after I said Happy Holidays. The holidays sure bring out the worst in some.

(503 posts)once on the "true meaning" of Christmas so I briefly told him what it was.
When I was a clerk I just smiled sweetly when people insisted on wishing me a blessed day - or started ranting about something. Off the clock I'm more honest but not very argumentative.
Since the Winter Solstice started it all I think it should be honored.

Yup, forcing people to say stuff they don't want to say, is as bad as inhibiting free speech.
Trump's idea sounds good to me.

It's like he has a checklist -
1.) Ban abortion? check
2.) Build wall to "keep 'illegals' out"? check
3.) Ban Muslims? check
4.) Arm everyone? check
5.) War on Christmas? check
6.) Blame Obama for every terrorist attack? check
7.) War on Women? check
8.) Repeal the ACA? check
If he continues on, I expect we'll soon hear -
1.) "English only"
2.) (Christian) Prayer in schools
and on and on....

(10,828 posts)Where did this man learn English? We all laughed at Palin's word salads--so many words, so little meaning. He owes so much to Christianity and then brags about how many evangelical votes he hauled (more than Ted Cruz). Humility is not something The Donald understands.

How can anyone force anyone else to celebrate a religious holiday against their own beliefs? Does this not go against the very idea of the first amendment?
