Warren, Kaine, Castro on Clinton running-mate short list. Who do you think she will pick?

According to this new article (link below) sources are now saying Hillary has it down to these three. I would put money on Castro. Would like to see Warren but don't want to lose that Senate seat. Could care less about Kaine.

Warren brings excitement to the left base but they will already vote Dem. She isn't ready to be commander in chief. No geographic balance. MA will be blue. No gender balance and there should be. That is just reality at this time in our cultural history. Also, she would be replaced in the Senate by a Re-Puke gov.

Castro would bring geographic balance but won't help carry TX since it is SO red. Does help some with Latinos. But is he really ready to be commander in chief? Would they make an issue of the name "Castro"?

Kaine or Sherrod Brown are the best choices. Kaine brings VA. Brown brings OH. These are key swing states. Both relate well to working class white men. Kaine speaks Spanish and has a great relationship with that community. Brown excites the progressive base. Those are my two top choices. If it is Tim Kaine, then he needs to just gin himself up a bit and get ready to be a tough anti-Trump attack dog.

The can not be about just who excites you or who you would "like" it to be. You have to look at how the person helps the ticket in the big picture.

He doesn't merely not motivate progressives...the more they get to know him, the more he's going to confirm for them everything they've ever accused Hillary of being true. Tied to the hip with Wall St. Lacking true progressive values. Willing to compromise on anything and get entangled with any convenient ally, no matter how repugnant. Insincere about social justice and at-heart a morally-conservative Democrat. I don't need to tell you what progressives have against Hillary, you've been hearing it for years. I've been saying it for years...I've been critical of her since I lived in Yonkers and worked in Brooklyn.

Unlikely worst case scenario though, it creates a schism between working-class Hispanics, who tend to be more traditional and morally-conservative, and progressives, whose ideology is iconoclastic and anti-conservative. Do we really need a reason to pit two ascending social-groups of the Democratic coalition at each others throats over a mediocre VP choice?

A Hillary serious about unity never considers Kaine for a millisecond. I know Hillary isn't dumb so I assume this has to be a trial balloon by those in the party leadership that want Kaine on the ticket, trying to demonstrate that he would be a popular and effective choice.

He's not either.

She should go with Brown, Warren or Perez. Even Castro would be preferable...he's at-least charismatic enough to woo progressives, even if he's nothing of the sort. Clinton/Kaine isn't just a strictly center-right ticket...it's one with a severe likeability deficit.

Castro is a little too green to be a vice president. He needs to get elected to something before he should be considered.

Warren is better in the senate to keep pushing important issues. This leaves Tim Kaine who has experience and is well liked in Virginia which is one of the battleground states.

the ticket seems really bland. Fwiw, he's fluent in Spanish.

Castro is also a good guy, even though not fluent in Spanish, but a definite lightweight. I mean, he set up a preschool program as mayor and got a lot of minorities and lefties mad at him as head of HUD? Not his fault, he's young, but not yet a presidential quality resume either.

I like Warren--two older blonde women or not, that'd be a strong, dynamic ticket, but I think I'd better get ready to discover what else there is to like about Kaine.

Kaine is probably the best of the three you mentioned.

I'm totally opposed to Castro. I've been speaking out against the possibility of him being VP for over a year now and I'll continue to do so until it's confirmed he won't be picked. His qualifications to be Vice President are a joke. Can you imagine him in a VP debate against someone like Newt Gingrich? He'd look like a little boy standing next to him. It would be a disaster.

as well as myself.

While he does have fans among white males, PoC, now the majority of Texans, hate Trump with the heat at the heart of the sun. Women across party lines hate him even worse. Both Barbara and Laura Bush have stated that they do not see how any woman could vote for Trump. Texas should go purple this cycle. Castro could give it the extra push to turn blue. The Republicans have no path to victory without Texas.

Castro brings both geographic and ethnic balance to the ticket. Kaine does neither.

I don't think we should depend entirety on Trump to deliver the Hispanic vote-- or for anything else, for that matter. I also think it would be a letdown for us to offer up a monochrome white ticket now that Obama has broken the race barrier.

I think his time is yet to come. Lots going for him. I like the idea of turning Texas purple, if possible. That would be amazing...and worthy of the national scene that i believe he is headed for at some time or other.

Wed Jun 22, 2016, 01:09 AM

Here's my thinking:
Lizzie can fight the good fight better in the Senate. Furthermore, having two Northeastern women on the ticket only lends credence to the right wingers' notion that the Democrats are party of coastal elitists who have it out for men and for Middle America. That won't help in the swing states or down-ticket races (and, speaking as one of those Middle Americans, I don't want us to be a party of elitists, either.)
Julian seems a decent choice, but a little more experience might be preferable. Maybe next cycle.
Tim Kaine has executive experience, as governor, and Washington experience, as senator. Also, Virginia is getting bluer all the time, and Tim just might lock it up and take it off the table. The math looks good in that case - the Blue Wall (242) + New Mexico (5) + New Hampshire (4) + Virginia (13) = 264. ONE more swing state, out of at least six, puts her over the top.
