Related: About this forumFact Checkers Weigh in On Trump’s Speech and The Results Were Brutal
Donald Trump has always had a well-known aversion to truth and the facts, but Wednesdays speech showed him at his worst. The speech - filled with lies and nutty conspiracy theories - was put to the test by independent fact checkers. Here are a sampling of the results:
Politifact: Trumps wrong that Clinton's refugee plan would cost more than rebuilding all inner cities (Pants on Fire)
Politifact: Donald Trump wrongly claims there are many more part-time jobs because of health care law (False)
Politifact: Trump still wrong on his claim that opposed Iraq War ahead of the invasion (False)
Salon: Theres almost no way Trump is worth $10 billion.
CNN: Given that for almost all Americans, $1 million is hardly a small loan, especially back in 1968, we rate his claim that he started his business with a "small loan" as false.
CNN: We rate Trump's claim that Clinton let China steal intellectual property as false.
CNN: Trump's assertion is exaggerated. Therefore, we rate it as false.
CNN: Because it is impossible to attribute the ongoing bloodshed of the Syrian civil war to the rejected policies of a secretary of state now out of office for more than three years, we rate Trump's claim FALSE.
CNN: Looking at whether American citizens face the highest taxes, we rate Trump's claim as false.
CNN: Because it is impossible to attribute the ongoing bloodshed of the Syrian civil war to the rejected policies of a secretary of state now out of office for more than three years, we rate Trump's claim FALSE.
CNN: According to Trump, Clinton ran the State Department like her own personal hedge fund, doing favors for oppressive regimes and many others in exchange for cash. [...] Verdict: False.
CNN: Because there is no conclusive indication that Clinton's email was ever breached, let alone proof that foreign governments were behind even such attempts, we rate Trump's claim as false.
NYT: This is inaccurate, according to several organizations that have examined the claim. A thorough check by PolitiFact found about 30 countries that have higher tax rate structures than the United States That has not stopped Mr. Trump from making this claim repeatedly.
NYT: This substantially understates the financial assistance that Mr. Trump received from his father, Fred, a major real estate developer in New York City.
NYT: This assertion is mostly false.
NYT: But Tehran is farther from nuclear weapons than it was a year ago, when Mr. Trump began his campaign. It has given up 98 percent of its nuclear fuel in the past year, and partly dismantled many of its nuclear facilities, under an accord that had its roots in Mrs. Clintons time as secretary of state.
NYT: Mrs. Clinton has not said whom she would appoint, but the notion that she would nominate judges who would somehow overrule the Second Amendment is a Republican talking point that is not based on statements or past actions by Mrs. Clinton.
NYT: This is a misleading claim that omits key information.
ABC: His characterization of Clinton's role in the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, was entirely erroneous.
ABC: "Clinton's Email Was Hacked" [FALSE]
ABC: "Clinton Will Create Open Borders" [FALSE]
ABC: "We Are the Highest Taxed Nation in the World" [FALSE]
ABC: Hundreds of Recent Immigrants Are "Convicted" Terrorists (FALSE)
NBC: According to PolitiFact, 59% of Trump's checked claims have been deemed false or "Pants on Fire" false, versus 12% for Clinton.
AP: These statements make only passing acquaintance with reality.
AP: THE FACTS: Clinton is not sporting Brunei bling.
AP: THE FACTS: Trump's claim is more than double the actual increase.
AP: THE FACTS: Closer to the opposite is true.
AP: Trump is wrong about Clinton's stance on refugee screening.
AP: It's not true that Clinton's plan would create open borders.
NBC: Peter Schweizer, author of Clinton Cash, acknowledged multiple times to NBC that there was no quid pro quo found on this or any other supposed arrangement between Clinton, her State Department, Bill Clinton and the Foundation.
