A lot of studying is going on, though. For instance it appears a significant portion of Trump followers score low on "agreeableness," one of the Big 5 personality traits. Basically people low in "agreeableness" tend to be more prone to antagonism than cooperation, to be cynical and suspicious about people in high position, tend to assume evil elites are just there to grab every opportunity to cheat them. So when Trump tells them their government is "Stupid! They're all stupid and crooked! They're ripping you off!" he's just telling them what they want to hear, and they cheer.

(205,731 posts)Stands for. But you're certainly right about Trump voters. They agree with everything he says and he spouts what he knows they want to hear. It's a vicious cycle. But who knows what he actually thinks or believes, if anything? His voters don't seem to notice he contradicts himself on an hourly basis. But they think he stands for whatever misguided belief they hold and that's all that counts.

Sound like anyone closer to home?

(58,785 posts)lower "agreeableness" scores and populist sentiments, DrDan,... Turns out populist movements all combine a basic hostility toward evil "elites"/"the establishment" and assumptions of being cheated with a "host" ideology that can be almost anything on the political spectrum.
Seriously, the whole thing's turning out to be fascinating, the more so because realizing that political orientations are shaped by basic personality traits adds a whole new layer of understanding to what's happening in political movements.
It's easy to be fooled by the rationalizations and verbiage offered by political groups, much less so if the powerful underlying motivations that cause people to be attracted to different leaders are also understood.
