MauiTime identifies her as a Democratic Party activist; this article paints her as to the LEFT of Gabbard: http://mauitime.com/news/politics/maui-democratic-party-activist-shay-chan-hodges-says-shes-running-against-u-s-rep-tulsi-gabbard/
...That Gabbard is one of Sanders highest profile supporters is laudable to Chan Hodges, who said as much in her Medium essay. But Chan Hodges also pointed out that such support on its own does not mean that Congresswoman Gabbard represents us. She then outlined three factors that raise quite a few questions about how committed she is to fighting for our districts values.
First, that Gabbard has helped out billionaire Sheldon Adelson, the chairman and CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation who opposes organized labor and is a major campaign donor to conservative Political Action Committees and Republican candidates. Chan Hodges noted in her essay that Gabbard has introduced Adelson-backed legislation that would kill online gamblinga major threat to Adelsons interests.
Second, Chan Hodges noted that Gabbard has repeatedly criticized and mocked the Obama Administration for not saying were at war with Islamic extremismsomething even Sanders opposes. While I believe that no elected official should be above critique lest we devolve into a cult of personality over substance our district elected President Obama with a 70% majority, and a respectful discussion in an appropriate forum reflects both our district and Hawaiian values, Chan Hodges noted.
Finally, Chan Hodges criticized Gabbard for supporting legislation that would make it more difficult for refugees fleeing the bloody Syrian civil war to get to the U.S. [O]n November 19, 2015, Gabbard voted with 46 Democrats and 242 Republicans to pass HR 4038 the American SAFE Act of 2015, to institute a stronger screening process for refugees from Iraq and Syria who apply for admission to the U.S., Chan Hodges wrote. Previously, in 2014, Gabbard called for visa waivers to be curtailed from European countries with Islamic extremist populations specifically Britain, Germany, and France. (A year later, Donald Trump called for a ban on Muslims entering the US.)...

(78,249 posts)Very little of interest on Maui, or the other Neighbor Islands, gets reported on populous O'ahu. This will not serve Chan Hodges well, as the O'ahu portion of the Second District is at least as big as all the Neighbor Islands combined.

(78,249 posts)The Second District contains at least two of the military bases as well as lots of off-base housing. The rest of the district is the Neighbor Islands, with a much smaller military presence.

I have never understood why some on this board praise her as some progressive. She is probably less progressive than Jim Webb, although not as racist.

(11,175 posts)Let's see... we have a candidate who calls for more debates between candidates running for President, and even urges her supporters to join in demanding more debates -- https://web.archive.org/web/20080501015714/http://www.hillaryclinton.com/action/ncdebates -- when she deems that to be to her side's advantage, but who in a different race won't debate her primary challenger even once, when avoiding debates is what's to her advantage.
Be careful about calling such a stance hypocrisy. You might be running afoul of DU's rules.

(11,175 posts)Incidentally, the article linked in the OP plays up Gabbard's opponent's whining that the Gabbard campaign hasn't yet responded on debates. They may be pondering strategy, not having planned on the emergence of a challenger. The 2006 primary is over and done with so we know, with certainty, that Clinton participated in zero debates against her progressive challenger (who was, among other things, criticizing her for her conservative views on LGBT rights and foreign military interventions).
La Lioness Priyanka
(53,866 posts)But what I wonder is why Bernie fans are supporting the less progressive candidate, while at the same time complaining that the Democratic Party is not progressive enough
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)Gabbard came from a homophobic family background. Like many of us, she grew up absorbing the beliefs of her parents. Over time, she came to see the justice of the cause of equality, and changed her views. Nevertheless, her own prior views, and even those of her father, are being thrown in her face in this thread -- often by Clinton supporters.
I just find it more than a little striking that Clinton supporters, of all people, are so vocal in charging a candidate with hypocrisy about debates (see #17 and #24), with not always having been solid on LGBT issues, and with being too hawkish. It's a major glass house.
As for Gabbard, the main thing I know about her is that she exposed Debbie Wasserman Schultz's duplicity about the debates.

(53,866 posts)I just wonder why complain about the democrats not being progressive enough, if you won't support the progressive candidate, which in this case is not gabbard.
I personally think gabbard is a fine moderate democrat, but I'm not the one always complaining that every democrat needs to be a true progressive
