2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBREAKING: Donald Trump Campaign Floored By Launch Of Immediate FEC Investigation (DETAILS)
Donald Trump has been hit with a complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission over his requests for campaign contributions from foreign nationals, including individuals in the United Kingdom, Iceland, and Australia.
The complaint was filed by two campaign watchdog groups, the Campaign Legal Center and Democracy 21.
The Deputy Executive Director of the Campaign Legal Center, Paul S. Ryan, said that Trump should have known better when it comes to his across-the-seas solicitations.
In the case of the UK, the requests for money became so extreme that the Parliament has moved to officially block the Trump campaign from access to its members.
In the case of Iceland, leaders said the letter sent to them via email from the Trump campaign left them speechless.

(85,151 posts)From what I understand, they were basically spamming people. It was not a direct request from a person in the campaign to a foreign entity. It was junk mail

(62,444 posts)I don't know what you mean by "specific persons". Yes, it was sent to those email addresses, and yes, it probably included "Dear (name)".
What I am asking is whether there was something in the text of the email itself which suggested it was intended to be sent to a foreign legislator, as opposed to having been sent to a name and address submitted via web form to the Trump website by a prankster.

(3,335 posts)with a snarky response. I believe she had copies of at least two different letters. That's all I can recall. But you can probably check it out on the MSNBC website under Rachal's show. I believe it was signed by Donald Trump Jr. Rachal stated that most people who'd seen the letters didn't think that the Trumps could be that stupid. They theorized that either it was someone pranking the Donald or that Donald and Company were making use of someone's email listing that they had got a hold of, and had no bothered to go through it and verify the names on it before dumping it into the hopper (as she described it). I thought it was likely the latter because I know that people charge money for the use of mailing lists on a per name basis, and I know that the Donald is cheap and doesn't want to spend any of HIS money and since we know his campaign funds are low, it didn't seem beyond reality that he may have "borrowed" or "come by" a mailing list by some nefarious means and used it without scrubbing it for foreign nationals. They then sent out a lot of emails to the people on the list without checking first.

(62,444 posts)There are like ten countries whose legislators report receiving "an email". I don't know what you mean by "it was sent to a specific member". If you have a web form where people can input names and email addresses in order to get on a mailing list, then emails are going to go to whatever names and email addresses someone inputs to the website.
What I'm trying to find out is whether the content of the email itself suggested that it was knowingly sent to a member of a foreign legislature. That would be language like, "As a member of the Icelandic Parliament, we know you rely on a strong US..." or something to that effect.
If it was the same email that ANYONE gets, then it seems to be unlikely that Donald Trump Jr. was off on his own collecting email addresses of foreign legislators, but sound exactly like a project that would be taken on by someone having some fun.

That said, its been reported his idiot son has personally contacted at least one of these people.

(2,353 posts)with regards to alleged FEC violations of the Sanders campaign, I am going to withhold judgement until this progresses further. David Brock has been and always will be a slimeball in my eyes regardless if he is now a Dem.

(3,022 posts)solicited by Senator Sanders campaign? Is that a list of donations returned by Senator Sanders campaign as required by the FEC? Do you think this is in any way comparable to the violations alleged to have been committed by the Donald Trump campaign?

(25,048 posts)I doubt that a control freak like Donald Trump would give much freedom to his kids to run his businesses and campaign. He micro-manages everything so I'm fairly certain that he directed that these requests be sent. Actually, I really don't care because they wouldn't be effective. As we've seen from the responses, Mr. Trump has just made an ass of himself on the world stage. His kids must be so proud.
In the linked article is this gem: "The Deputy Executive Director of the Campaign Legal Center, Paul S. Ryan." He's the official looking into Mr. Trump's solicitations. I feel badly for the guy to be stuck with that name.
