2016 Postmortem

My feeling is it will indeed be Elizabeth Warren. Up til now I thought would be Xavier Becerra, but for some reason today I think it will be Senator Warren.

(12,011 posts)Her record, not so much. And picking a centrist VP only heightens suspicions that she is not truly committed to all of the progressive planks of the platform.

(30,481 posts)The only people to not recognize that are the people who are a part of the one and done crowd. Interesting that they are never one and done with respect to some of the more egregious missteps of the candidate they support.
Clinton has decades of progressive accomplishments. Yes, there are numerous shit sandwiches in there as well. So did all of our candidates. Unicorns are for children's TV shows.
democrattotheend
(12,011 posts)I think she is definitely more progressive than her husband, especially on domestic issues. But on foreign policy I would not describe her as progressive. This is based on her record as Secretary of State and the positions she has taken in this election, not just on her enthusiastic support for the Iraq War authorization 14 years ago. She did a lot of good things as Secretary of State, but her foreign policy outlook is more hawkish than I am comfortable with. That said, I trust her to have access to the nuclear launch codes a lot more than I trust Trump!

(30,481 posts)You just hit on my Clinton concern and stated in a very similar way that I have in the past.
Thanks for the thoughtful post.

(58,785 posts)insiders are narrowing in on him. Kaine is a white male, and we need the white male leaners, he should bring swing state Virginia and help with the large Hispanic bloc, and he has an excellent reputation and good moderate-liberal progressive credentials. Those last are very real, even if some on the farther left reject him out of hand.

(45,728 posts)I want Warren as well. I can live with the others. I know press has declared it will be Kaine, but they have been known to get things wrong.

Senator Warren is much more effective in the position she is currently in. Plus Mass currently has a Republican governor so it would be more than likely a republican (remember Scott Brown...) would be appointed to replace her in the Senate.

(42,618 posts)I will be satisfied with Kaine, for the same reasons I was satisfied with Biden. Not my first pick though.
I'll be happy with whoever she picks. I'm just not feeling it with Kaine. But again, it's just my gut.

(12,011 posts)Kaine is not my first choice - my first choices are also Warren and Perez. But Kaine is not a terrible choice. He is reasonably progressive, certainly not a DINO.

(43,810 posts)That's all I need, and all I care about. Elizabeth Warren would be great, but I'm perfectly fine with Tim Kaine.

(3,297 posts)The Dem party as a whole hasn't figured out that it's coalition looks different than it did in the 90s, and thinks it needs a conventional, personally-religious, bland, technocratic white guy on the ticket to keep imagined suburban white-collar voters from bolting.
