PHILADELPHIA Debbie Wasserman Schultz wasnt supposed to ask Joe Biden to come to her daughters bat mitzvah.
Democratic National Committee staff had sent the chair to the vice president armed with four specific requests for getting him involved in raising money for the party.
Story Continued Below
She decided to scrap them for two of her own.
First, she asked Biden to do a fundraiser for her own reelection to her House seat in Florida in the primary challenge shes facing next month. He agreed.
The second was to get down to Boca Raton for the bat mitzvah.
Bidens staff balked. They offered to tape a video message from him instead, hoping that would satisfy her.
Wasserman Schultz eagerly said yes. They played it for everyone who came.
The meeting with Biden was symptomatic of the way the DNC was veering off the rails just as the presidential election was heating up. More than a dozen people inside the party apparatus, speaking in the wake of Wasserman Schultzs resignation on Sunday, describe an internal culture in which few felt they could challenge an increasingly imperious and politically tone-deaf chair who often put her own interests ahead of party functions.
Last weeks WikiLeaks dump, releasing thousands of emails showing DNC officials sparring with Bernie Sanders supporters and with one another, was what finally got Hillary Clintons top aides to force her out Sunday on the eve of the convention.
Now, all DNC senior staffers seem to believe theyre on the verge of being fired and thats before the next WikiLeaks release, which many fear is coming within days, and which DNC lawyers are bracing for. Several staff members have already been asked to prepare statements about their departures.

(12,008 posts)From that article it seems the Hillary folks have wanted her out as much as the Bernie folks. She wasn't Hillary's pick, she was Obama's, and the Obama folks soured on her too after 2012. The only reason she was kept in power is because the president thought she would do more harm from the outside if she were removed. I think he might have made a different decision knowing what we know now.

At this, DWS stopped being the problem. There are other people who are guilty and need to go, as many of these emails were not written by her.

The best thing to come out of Wikileaks is this housecleaning at the DNC.
Wonder why we have been losing so many elections? Hmmm... I bet the awful leadership has something to do with it.
Howard Dean was the last excellent DNC chair we had. He realized that in order to execute a 50-state strategy, we needed to have strong state and local democratic parties. He raised funds and allocated resources to struggling democratic parties across the nation. He built up the party infrastructure and we had great success under this model down ticket.
No shade to Tim Kaine, but we needed someone who was not already elected to office to continue the work Dean began. When we get to DWS, for her nearly 5 years of service we as a party have many losses to show under her leadership. Interestingly, her own stock seems to have risen during this time. DWS is out for DWS. She wants to be a party minority or majority leader. However, she doesn't seem to be very interested in electing Democrats in her own state. Why is that?
We're wondering how we had so many disruptors at the convention and how they got credentialed. Well, the local party is in charge (usually) of vetting these delegates. Part of the vetting process should include verification of registration as a Democrat, participation in the local Democratic party, and/or a documented record of Democratic voting and support. Clearly this didn't happen and I think that part of the problem was that the DNC divested of the resources Howard Dean had given to local parties in order to build up the infrastructure.

I'm pleased that Clinton seems to want to bring back the 50 state strategy. DWS was sacked too late, in my opinion, but maybe we can get Howard to come back and help us with a "Cliff Notes" version to win this election.

(16,104 posts)the Sanders campaign violated their agreement with the DNC and downloaded proprietary Clinton campaign data? And then sued the DNC for somehow making them do it?
Remember that?
You don't?
OK. Go back to hating on DWS.

Bernie fired him and apologized, which displayed his integrity. One of the traits I admire him for.

(32 posts)the party members are bashing her. DNC folks are the ones going on record bashing her.
She's been basically banished from the convention, so it would seem the Party has disowned her and DU isn't saying anything the DNC isn't saying themselves publicly. .

(677 posts)It's interesting how Debbie Wasserman-Schultz was so worried about getting Joe Biden down to her daughter's bat mitzvah in the middle of so many losses that we sustained on the state level (in legislatures and governorships). If she spent half as much time attempting to build grass roots support for and getting Democratic candidates elected, as opposed to showing public support for Republican candidates in her home state of Florida, doing her best for the payday loan industry, and repealing the standard of not accepting corporate lobbyist contributions to DNC, her ouster from the party (considering this e-mail scandal) might have not happened so hastily.
What's rich is that there are even some DU folks on here that have painted Bernie Sanders with the broad brush "well he's only been a Democrat for a year and a half," while he's consistently caucused with Democrats, worked with them in the Senate, and has always been right on progressive legislation.
Meanwhile, we had someone at the helm of LEADERSHIP of the DNC that was presiding over staff members that couldn't muster enough maturity and professionalism to determine whether the content of the e-mail that they were sending and receiving (should they be disclosed) would bring damage to the party.
Frankly, I'm glad some house cleaning is about to happen.

Statement by the President on Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultzs Resignation
For the last eight years, Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has had my back. This afternoon, I called her to let her know that I am grateful. Her leadership of the DNC has meant that we had someone who brought Democrats together not just for my re-election campaign, but for accomplishing the shared goals we have had for our country. Her critical role in supporting our economic recovery, our fights for social and civil justice and providing health care for all Americans will be a hallmark of her tenure as Party Chair. Her fundraising and organizing skills were matched only by her passion, her commitment and her warmth. And no one works harder for her constituents in Congress than Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Michelle and I are grateful for her efforts, we know she will continue to serve our country as a member of Congress from Florida and she will always be our dear friend.

(835 posts)Buried inside a Politico report about Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultzs (D-FL) future aspirations was an interesting revelation: When [Wasserman Schultz] sensed Obama was considering replacing her as chair in 2013, she began to line up supporters to suggest the move was both anti-woman and anti-Semitic.
Wasserman Schultz is reportedly very much at odds with White House staffers, and rarely even speaks with President Barack Obama.
The report mainly focuses on Wasserman Schultzs political future, and whether she should stay on as DNC chair through the 2016 campaign, co-chair a likely Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, or even run for Senate in 2016. A position in House leadership is unlikely for her, as the report notes, because Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Steny Hoyer (D-MD) are unlikely to leave any time soon. Her current term as DNC chair ends at the beginning of 2017.

(5,271 posts)email them. I just hope nothing comes out where she was getting special treatment by them (coordinating things) before she was the nominee. Now it just looks like a DNC issue. However, if it links back to Clinton then they will make a big deal about it. Especially since she already had issues with email messages.
