2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI just have to say - this was the best convention I've seen in my lifetime
And it has nothing to do with my candidate throughout the primaries being nominated - and we've seen some really good ones (and some turkeys like 1984.)
It was an extraordinary combination of powerful Democratic voices. As Taegan Goodard said, a "wonderful mix of patriotism, diversity and love for country."
I agree with Joe Scarborough - you'd have to go back to JFK's time to see THIS Democratic party.

(7,723 posts)not everything was great, but there were so many great and unique and quirky moments... coming together, it showcased everything I love about the Dem party.

(39,388 posts)Capt. Khan's father, Rev. Barber, Michael Bloomberg...and then there is the long list of people who have been touched by the candidate herself. The best parts of the convention were ordinary people who were willing to speak out. That's what showed more than anything the power of our message. I'm sure people watching the networks missed at least half of it. In many cases, it was the best half. In any case, it all added up brilliantly.

(18,402 posts)and inspiration of this convention. They were the most compelling testaments to the greatness of our nation and its people.
By contrast, many of the political figures seemed, well, a bit dull.
The stream of American citizens telling their real stories provided the most compelling portrait of America--one that put Donald Trump's dystopic vision of the country to rest.

(39,388 posts)It's a thrill to hear good people speak from the heart about things that matter. There is such an impoverishment of that in our culture. I wouldn't miss them for the world which is why I stick with CSPAN during these meetings.

(3 posts)I was so nervous heading into this week after Trump's hatefest but I have to say, this was an inspiring week that left me feeling more positive and optimistic than ever.

(10,237 posts)If you want true DISASTERS, I'd say look at 1968 & 1972...YIKES!
Of course, I don't know how old you are. I'm 61. The first convention I watched fully was 1964. In 1960 I was 5 and my parents had long since sent me to bed.

(43,870 posts)So of all the ones I have real memories of, '84 was the worst. I would have been livid watching '68 if I'd been of age then.

(10,237 posts)...1984 was bad for the election result! Yuck!
What made 1972 such a disaster was that the division was so bad that EVERYTHING was a debate and a floor fight and a roll call vote. George McGovern didn't get on to make his (pretty good) acceptance speech until around 2:30AM, when only the most devoted followers would be watching.
The
The job that his campaign manager did in vetting Tom Eagleton made the Palin vetting process look downright scrupulous.
Of course, losing 49 states in November didn't help much!

(28,270 posts)It looked like America. All races, creeds and colors.
Some of the best speeches and I mean excellent speeches!
What a send off for Hillary's GE campaign! You couldn't have asked for a better one IMO.
Kudos to the planners and workers that put it all together! It seems as if democrats have all the best people!!!

(4,311 posts)Democrats have taken back the identifier of "Patriot" by showing what the real America looks like.
And it also bodes very, very well for Hillary's GE campaign. This was so well-organised, so well done throughout. We've always known Hillary's a person who is prepared for everything. I think this is how the whole thing is gonna go. Seamless.

(11,773 posts)I stayed away from the national broadcasts, and I'm glad I did. I think C-SPAN did a great job on focusing on the convention itself, instead of the few jerks there to disrupt. I loved seeing young women in tears when Hillary was on stage... the diversity in the speakers and convention goers... the music... the positive theme. Really, I think this was probably the greatest convention I've ever watched. Very powerful and uplifting!

(4,157 posts)There have been candidates I've liked better, but this convention was awe inspiring in that the organizers presented a perfectly organized event to draw in voters. I feel very confident--not complacent--that HRC will win.
