2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTrump is the first modern Republican to win the nomination based on racial prejudice
By Michael Tesler August 1 at 5:00 AM
Republicans have long been the party of racial conservatism. Since at least the 1960s, the GOPs policies, rhetoric, and voters have been less supportive of minorities than have the Democrats. These partisan differences over race have become especially pronounced during the Obama presidency.
But while white Republicans are more likely than white Democrats to express racially resentful beliefs, racial prejudice is thought to play a larger role in shaping the political preferences of liberals. In other words, racial politics has divided the Democratic Partys diverse coalition more than it has splintered the overwhelmingly white Republican Party.
Those historical differences have also been present in the two parties presidential primaries. Vote choice in the 1984, 1988, 2008 and 2016 Democratic nominations, for example, were all sharply divided by race.
The Republican Party, however, has been more unified in recent decades around a color-blind policy alliance, which calls for a diminished role of race in public policies. With the notable exception of Pat Buchanans campaigns to preserve white cultural hegemony in the 1990s, few Republican candidates for president have attempted to directly distinguish themselves from their GOP rivals on matters of race and ethnicity. Until now.

(10,437 posts)he had some major impacts with elections and primaries in the 60's.....but yes, Trump is a figure head of a conservative party that accepts and encourages racism and bigotry, the demeaning of women, gays, and muslims. GOP may get the majority of white angry males, but they will lose and lose big every other demographic across the board. They know it and we know it.
This is no longer a reality show where trump can "retape" the last take.....and we are watching an unfit man twist and contort himself hourly.....

(26,622 posts)not as bad, but his policies hurt everyone and hate radio flourished during Reagan's time ( yeah the fairness doctrine) which was the pre cursor to fox.Republicans have been racist as long as I remember, they just weren't so blatant about it. Trump is a natural progression for a party that reviles progress.

Maybe it's our imagination, but it seems that people treat us differently if they know we're Americans ... but not in a good way.

Of all the places in the United States he picked some shithole, podunk town in MISSISSIPPI to launch his campaign?
Why?

Fact is, as deplorable as Jr was, he and his father are the only Rs in my lifetime to win POTUS without directly channeling racism.

(20,450 posts)All of these modern day Republicans have used racism or subtle dog whistle racist tactics to appeal to white voters.
In fact, the very reason that we have "Reagan Democrats" today is due to Reagan's exploitation of race.
