2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThank You DU
for helping me to keep my sanity! I'm new here and I'm so glad I found you. I'm a 56 year young black female living in southern Ohio who has voted democrat all my life. My family has always worked hard and has never been on any public assistance..welfare. I have two children...one in graduate school at Texas AM and the other set to graduate from Wright State in December. No one in my family has ever been in trouble with the law...my children have no children and my husband has worked everyday since we married in 1989. This election has caused me to lose my best friend of 50 years because of her choice to "maybe" vote for Donald Trump. While I respect her right to vote for who she chooses...she has always been a Republican...I can't get over the fact she and her family is supporting him. I tried to reason...in my mind...that maybe it's because he portrays himself as the law and order candidate and her son is soon to be a graduate of a police academy and she thinks Trump's hard stance on minorities will keep her son safe but what about my son.
I tried to explain that Trump's racially charged rhetoric against "the blacks", Muslims, Mexicans, immigrants won't make us safer...his sexist comments....his strong support for Russia...his refusal to release his taxes..his inability to speak in complete sentences....his ignorance of global politics...vilification of his critics...his obvious lies and his incessant chatter of how great he is makes for a very dangerous and incompetent president.
I think most of Trump supporters feel threatened. Threatened by the fact that in 52 short years, after the passing of the Civil Rights Act, we have a black president...elected twice...they are hoping the South will rise again...and they can take their rightful place above the so many minorities in this country who have stepped up and over them. They are angry because the American Dream is working for everyone and they want Trump to take it back! Hillary Clinton for President...so that the American Dream can continue for us all! Rant Over

(12,157 posts)I know it is hard but if you can stand it try to keep some lines open between you and your friend. I know it is hard because it boils down to the love of your children. That is something you both have in common even though it puts you on opposite sides. I don't expect her to change but one can always hope that she will consider the value of your children is worth more than fear and hatred.
And I find it hard to write this because I am not a fan, "GIG'EM, AGGIES!" Did I really write that?
I live in the Maroonist place in the world, Brazos County, TX. There is a love/hate relationship with TAMU students. While they drive the local economic engine they drive really stupid on the streets.
I had to look up Wright State, near Wright Patterson AFB where it is rumored that the remains of the alleged UFO craft is stored in secret. WOOOOOO!

(23,677 posts)Congratulations on the success you and your family have had. You must be very proud of your kids.
There's no explaining or rationalizing to people firmly rooted in RW rhetoric and Fox News is their only source for news and enlightenment.
All we can do is work very hard at GOTV and voting for down ticket candidates so we can begin to take back statehouses, state legislatures, the US congress and US Senate.

I'm new here as well. The political positions here are generally to my liking, which is refreshing compared to the right-wing arguments I encountered all too frequently on the last discussion board I was a member of. It's not that I cannot tolerate a right winger, but when anyone makes a case for Drumpf over Clinton, I totally lose respect for them.

I, too, have a best friend since we were both in grade school together, and she somehow fell down the republi-CON black hole, too. Which just breaks my heart, gotta tell ya!
This place helped save my sanity throughout the really dark days of bush/cheney.

(7,633 posts)You're definitely in the right place and one can learn a lot here.
One thing I noticed when I first joined is that there are a lot of acronyms and abbreviations used here so if you don't understand them, don't be afraid to ask for clarification.
Glad to hear your family is an American success story. Let's hope your friend becomes successful in discovering the truth about Trump.

When you keep mowing the top of a plant over and over to the ground, the roots still continue to grow... larger and larger and deeper and deeper. But as soon as you stop mowing the top, the plant bursts into massive growth because it really is a mature plant that has been stifled, and it eventually catches up with the rest of the plants its age.

(11,631 posts)I agree with your thoughts a lot of poor white people are threatened by the perceived loss of privilege. WJ Cash described the dynamic perfectly in "The Mind of the South" 75 years ago.

Just don't discuss politics unless she brings it up. But be ready, just in case. Don't challenge HER beliefs. Keep it calm, tell her what you think, and why you think that way. You never know which ones are ready to turn.
Just remember these four little words...President Hillary Rodham Clinton!
And, welcome to DU!

(6,496 posts)I try not to challenge their beliefs, but I won't lie to them about what I think if they ever were to ask. I think they know where I stand and I know where they stand for the most part so we don't need to have those discussions anyhow. I don't bring up politics, but they do sometimes. I just try to be nice about it.

(6,496 posts)I have some republican friends, but I pretty much avoid talking politics with them. Sometimes it comes up, but I let them say their piece and then I steer then conversation to something else. I have given up on trying to persuade anyone of anything when it comes to politics. I think of it almost like religion. I have one friend who is very Christian and I'm sure she'd love to convert me to Christianity, but she doesn't try to do it because she knows that it wouldn't work and it would probably would make me upset with her. It is the same deal with the politics. I leave politics and religion alone for the most part. I do this out of respect for my friends and their differing opinions and they do the same for me. I know that they are not bad people. Arguing politics usually comes across as either "I think you are a bad person" or " I think you are dumb". I do happen to think that my friends are not as smart as I am in some ways, but that's not something that can ever be communicated in a nice way (I feel totally arrogant writing that, but I think it is true). They seem to get suckered by these con-artist politicians easily. They don't seem to see these people for what they really are.

(14,532 posts)I lost a lot of friend's in the 2012 election. A few have come back, even fewer apologized. I agree I could not be friends with someone who would vote for people who would support politicians that demonize the LBGT community. They know I have several family members who are gay, that I love dearly. How could they vote for someone who chums around with preacher that demonize them and says things like gays should be put in camps? The 2012 election was the last straw for me. I pulled no punches with them.
