Wash Post: GOP's Huge Problem - No One Knows How Low Trump Can Go

"Donald Trump’s continuing war with the Khan family — which Trump inexplicably continued to keep in the news this morning with a series of new tweets — raises the specter of a brutal trap for Republicans.

It’s this: If individual Republicans don’t break off their support for Trump’s candidacy now — by, say, withdrawing their endorsements — they run the risk of having no choice but to do so after Trump sinks even further into wretchedness and depravity, to a point of true no return. (Presumably there is such a point.) At that juncture, their move will look unprincipled and desperate, leaving them stained — perhaps irrevocably — with their previous willingness to stick by him during much of his descent, and depriving their break with him of whatever moral force it might have had if done earlier."

"Trump kept the story going this morning, tweeting angrily that Khan had attacked him (reminding us that Trump, not the grieving father of a fallen soldier whose religion Trump attacked, is the truly aggrieved party here) and that this story is not about Khan but is rather about “RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM.” Republicans who have long warned their own party against embracing Trump are noting that this episode shows we are only seeing the beginnings of how unhinged Trump’s candidacy could become.

“Trump is inevitably going to get worse, not better, as his poll numbers get worse,” Tim Miller, a former adviser to Jeb Bush and a frequent Trump critic, told me this morning. “When he’s being criticized and his back is against the wall, he’s going to act out and become more extreme and despicable. Every time we think he’s gone as low as he’s going to go, he manages to sink even lower. There is no argument for waiting until he behaves better.”

that a Trump victory would be the worst thing that could ever happen to the R Party.

They're not at that point yet, and they may not get there before Nov, but eventually political self preservation will overwhelm them, hopefully before the election.

There will be a hardcore group (I'd say in the 15-20% area) that will NEVER desert him. I had one of his supporters tell me that she didn't care what the facts were. She believed him and that was all that was necessary.

Got to admire a man who can do that these days. I don't want someone who's been in government. We need someone to shake up Washington.

I don't always agree with what Trump says, but my taxes are too high dammit and I'm voting for Republicans up and down the ticket.

Don't kill the messenger. This is what people around me are actually beating their chests about. In their minds, they can cast off his blatant indefensible positions, because when it comes down to MONEY, they believe in republican principles, that it was the republicans who rescued us from the market crash of 2007, not Obama and the democratic congress that got policies changed. And and low taxes.

This is who we are up against in this election. Not Trump. He could literally start shooting white Christians as a sacrifice to himself as the all mighty deity and they will still support him, BECAUSE HE'S A REPUBLICAN.

We need to pressure every democrat in this free land of ours to get a vote in for Hillary or else these people will give us Trump and a house stacked with even more backwards thinkers.

"Republican politicians face a choice. They can accept Hillary Clinton’s invitation to abandon Donald Trump and prevent a redefinition of their party as a haven for bigotry. Or they can prop Trump up, try to maximize his vote — and thereby tarnish themselves for a generation….Every Republican politician and commentator who continues to say that Trump is a superior or even morally equivalent choice to Hillary Clinton will now own their temporary leader’s brutality for the rest of their political careers."

Pretty well sums up their dilemma.

It is a testament to how partisan our politics have become. The Republicans AND Democrats for that matter could put up Freckles the Clown as their nominee and it would essentially be a 51-49, 52-48 ish type of election. People thought Donald Trump was just being Donald Trump when he said he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose supporters. He wouldn't. Not a lot!!! That is how divided we are. Being the nominee has not changed what the Republican party is. It has revealed what it is. So they have to live with this. They said nothing when Trump went on and on about Obama's citizenship and have relatively sat on their hands while he has made some of the most xenophobic statements as a candidate.

This is the angry white person's last stand for those that want the America where Black and Brown people stayed "in their place" and didn't threaten to disrupt the system that has kept them in total and complete power. This is the candidate many have wanted since Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in the 60s. So just own it. The tomfoolery of the past 8 years paved the way for Donald Trump. When you create a monster, don't be surprised when it acts like a monster.

We know he'll insult anyone who seems to challenge him, that he will continue to use profanity, and that he can't stand losing. We know his insults are not well thought out and don't withstand a moment's scrutiny.

To go lower, he'd probably have to start raping and murdering on live TV.

"Every time we think he’s gone as low as he’s going to go, he manages to sink even lower. There is no argument for waiting until he behaves better.”

This IS exactly what many of us have been saying about the Republicans, that whenever we think they cannot go any lower, the do. Did anyone see the GOP supporting Trump? Well, of course we did...they can't help but dig themselves lower and lower.

When I see a Mole, I see a republican...dig..dig..dig..baby!

Do they hunker down and continue the silent bunker mentality?

Send an emissary to disengage and find another candidate?

Call election law experts?

Publicly repudiate and try to save their majorities?

They are probably trying to assess how much damage each alternative entails.

They are entrenched and mired in it. They own Trump, Trump owns them.

But please look on the bright side: Do they have a good choice?

They need to cut him loose cause WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY GOING TO DO IF HE WINS???

They can't control him; hell, he cannot even control himself! He is a danger to the nation and they KNOW it. I think they think he is going to lose without embarrassing them too much and they can just write him off as some aberration. But what if he WINS?? Then what?? We are ALL fucked!

They know giving up on the presidency means giving up the Supreme Court for the next generation. They know that the radical right on the SC have given them huge victories since the Bush appointees came on board. This election is likely to undo so much bad law, including Citizen's United, the Voting Rights Act, Abortion restrictions, etc.

They don't want to give up too soon and that's what could turn the tide of the Senate and maybe the House as well. And as an added bonus, destroy what's left of this zombie republican party.
