2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumEnthusiasm for Hillary, how is it where you are?
As a social services caseworker I am seeing a very low level of enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton from my clients and coworkers.
Among my colleagues and friends I have seen people who once would not be caught dead posting something from right wing sources posting stuff about Hillary and arming Syrian rebels and other items. These were or are mostly Bernie Sanders supporters, I only say that to illustrate that as far as people I know I am not seeing them very receptive to Clinton. I fear this will translate in many instances to people staying home.
These are people who had been ardent supporters of progressive causes. I work in SNAP and Medicaid services and also CPS. I interact with numerous people daily, and I have not seen such a lack of enthusiasm as this in the election.
Edited to add that I am in Kentucky, so there could be direct regional influence.

(47,209 posts)There are a few people who "hate her" and get angry and nasty and the are shocked they can't bait me. I tell them if they can support a moron and bigot who will be a failure and embarrassment that I got nothing to say to them. They usually Turn red and run. Lol.

"Lesser of two evils" atmosphere. Some say they'll sit this one out. She'll be a hard sell in many areas. Thank goodness she's up against a jerk like Trump.

(30,058 posts)Sanders supporter. Since the primaries started I have found many are not for agenda items Sanders pushed to have. Maybe this is why he lost I my state.

(31,531 posts)politics at all. I know a few people who have said earlier that they would vote for Trump, but they've been strangely quiet lately. I doubt she will carry the state, but I get the feeling that Trump's support is deteriorating.

(10,014 posts)and my co-workers are mostly from conservative small towns and the suburbs. The majority are republicans and are talking about voting for Gary Johnson. They all think Trump is nuts but they would never vote for a Dem.
One calls herself an independent and said her first choice was Marco Rubio and her second was Elizabeth Warren. I just put my earphones on and ignore them.

I don't blame you for wearing your headphones!

(14,449 posts)Trump may have a harder time in Florida as long as everyone in Miami area gets out and votes Hillary. I am outside Orlando (45 minutes). My area will go GOP. Ugh!

(12,723 posts)Oklahoma I am not surprised. If the republicans were running just about anyone else she would not have a chance in hell of winning this election.
Runningdawg
(4,522 posts)and I confirm this. Liberals in OK rarely bother with yard signs that go missing repeatedly. In my neighborhood there were a handful for Bernie, none for HC. My friends were excited about the election, couldn't wait to vote for Bernie. Now? 75% of the will more than likely vote against Trump but they aren't voting FOR Hillary. The Bernie yard signs are gone, but nothing has taken their place.
It seems most see HC as nothing more than a place holder until we can get our shit together for 2020.

(4,465 posts)There are a few Republicans here in the suburbs of Philly who do support her ( disgusted with the Trumpster ) and the Dems are strong for her.

(4,640 posts)so I feel your pain. Yet, I'm seeing and hearing QUIET agreement and support for Hillary! Mind you, my county in the primary went for her, which shocked the hell out of me.

(108,995 posts)in supporting her now. There are no Trump or Stein converts --at least publicly.
Kentucky has 8 electoral votes and is reliably Republican. The only Dems who have won there in the last 50 years were Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Mitt Romney beat Obama there, but who's the President now?
With so few minority voters, Hillary is unlikely to win there. Her base of support is in large states with large minority communities.

Puzzledtraveller
(5,937 posts)I haven't for that reason, and my parents who I admit are supporting Trump had planned to put a sign out and I convinced them not to. Partly for concerns of vandalism, they are quite aged and don't need any problems and sadly there are people on both sides who cause trouble but mostly to keep his name out of the neighborhood, but I didnt tell my parents about that reason.

(22,165 posts).... MUTED. The democrats are supporting Clinton (oddly, in my Democratic congressional district, I didn't see much enthusiasm during the primary for either candidate )
Republicans are unwilling to discuss

(115 posts)I live in a republican stronghold and it is not unusual for there to be little support of a democratic candidate. BUT what I am finding is people in my own personal circle who do not live in this area but the more metropolitan areas around St. Louis or Chicago are voting for either Johnson or Stein. I know less than 10 people who support Hillary. And I know a lot of people. The ones who support Trump think he is awful and they say they know he is kind of crazy but they just can't vote for Hillary.
I don't like being a doom and gloom camper because I want nothing more than her to win, but I am concerned. I know the polls look better post convention, but I don't know how accurate the polls are any longer.
I think on election day, all over the Midwest, that white men are going to put down their beer, lower the leg lift on their barcalounger and head for the polls. And I think they are going to vote enmass for the Orange Peril. I see people here posting maps with Nebraska going blue and talking about landslides and I don't know where they are getting this optimistic point of view. Because it is not at all what I am encountering. I sure hope they are right.

(6,496 posts)because they don't want to get shit for it. Makes sense. I take the same strategy. I will show up to vote to for Hillary. I'm not going to tell everyone I know this. I am very enthusiastic about Hillary, but I keep that to myself mostly.
