(7,952 posts)The repubs would almost rather self-immolate than do anything Obama suggests.
Is it possible he's wanting the true faithful to latch onto him tighter and keep him in the race because he told them not to? Attach enough tea-partiers permanently to the sinking anchor of Trump? If all the GoP get totally wise to Don, they'll catapult him into Mexico and renominate someone with an actual better chance of getting votes. We'd get Jeb or Kaisch or Romney and it would be a normal election season again.
Still, if they do renounce Trump, Obama gets a nice little mention in the history books that Republicans withdrew support of an unfit candidate due to his suggestion. Which hopefully will send Coulter and O'Reilly and Savage and Hannity into brain-melting conniption fits and spare us their analysis.

(19,847 posts)Many established conservative pundits are being very frank in their disgust and the Koch's big meeting a few days ago is suggestive that they want to quarantine Trump and inoculate themselves against him for the good of the down-ticket races.

(10,252 posts)More and more the media is jumping on the bandwagon to repudiate Trump. And since Trump is incapable of ever apologizing, refuses to practice political correctness, unable to mentally focus, unable learn from mistakes, completely deaf and blind to how others perceive him, he will just continue to say one stupid and outrageous thing after another, week after week. And do you believe for one minute that a vet handed his purple heart medal to Trump? That's just another lie. Now the question is: when o when will McConnell, Ryan, Cornyn, etc repudiate Trump and negate their endorsement? I predict that as Trump's poll numbers go lower and lower, GOP leaders, especially Senators, will withdraw endorsements about 2 weeks before the election. It's very very sad, but perhaps a humiliating defeat will help Republicans get a better grip on a little morality and tolerance. It's looonnng overdue.

President Obama: Donald Trump Is 'Unfit to Serve as President'
"President Obama said today Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is "unfit to serve as president."
In a press conference with Singapore's prime minister, Obama added that Trump has shown he is "woefully unprepared to do this job" after his comments on military families as well as his handle on foreign affairs.
"The notion that he would attack a Gold Star family that made such extraordinary sacrifices on behalf of our country, the fact that he doesnt appear to have basic knowledge around critical issues in Europe, in the Middle East, in Asia, means that he is woefully unprepared to do this job," the president said at the White House."

(10,857 posts)... is the equally important but less well-known fact that the Presidential Daily Briefing is distributed at the pleasure of the President himself. President Obama is therefore in a unique position to know for sure that a particular candidate is unfit to serve and exactly why, too.
It looks to me like he's rather confidently and explicitly laying out a pathway which leads directly to Donald Trump's resignation from the race, about which I have already bored you all for a week, now.
In other words, President Obama is quite deliberately setting politics aside and making the case that this dude is a nutjob unworthy of the racist, economy-crashing, war-starting, witch-hunt-having, birth-certificate-searching party of undiluted scum.
If he's doing that, you'd better fuckin' believe that he's got the goods on Trump and he is, in his polite way, offering the villains one last chance to set aside their differences and join him before the boom drops on everyone left on deck.
Most of them won't take the President's advice, and so much the better for us. But let none of them say they were not warned....
