2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"Hillary will imprison people of faith" I was told today. W.T.F?
They couldn't explain why they feared this, but they were very passionate about it. I have no idea what was meant. Any enlightenment beyond "they're paranoid nuts" is appreciated.
"That marriage thing made it so people can marry anything. A guy is suing to marry his computer." was easily countered with computers aren't adult humans, but the faith/prison thing had me stumped.
I was appalled to hear this from a fellow nurse. Seriously, wtf? People really surprise me sometimes.

(503 posts)I've heard everything from Obama's packing the cabinet with Muslims (he'd just appointed John Kerry) to all those mills in South Carolina closed because of Obama (they 'd been closed for years before he even took office) to the peace sign is the broken cross of Jesus - it's Satanic.
I know one out of three of those came from a southern preacher. I suspect the others did too.

(7,906 posts)When she spoke at the Women of the World summit, she spoke of how structural bias in culture and religion needed to be changed.
From that statement some took it as she would persecute those who hold religious pro life beliefs.

(7,906 posts)I'm just grateful, that at least among my peers, even the women who would never choose abortion for their own personal reasons, understand that other women need to have the choice.

Projection is all these people do, 24/7. If they say blah blah is gonna happen because YOU are a bad person, rest assured blah blah is exactly what they have planned for you.
Here in 2016 we still have many who act like medieval ignoramuses. It's sad.

I was needless to say speechless. The couple the shower was for are both millennials who work in the tech field for major corps in high end jobs. I know them well, they do not think like this. The person who said it was an aunt of theirs who is a RN. She's in her early 40's I think.
All I have to offer is some people would rather live in fear than learn:
A) the Constitution of the United States.
B) Basic civics.

(29,199 posts)we need to start standing up and embarrassing people to their face.
Ask how those last 10 conspiracy theories worked out... staring with Jade Helm 15...
Or the UN takeover of our national parks...
Or...
All of these were supposed to usher in a period of martial law and mass arrests.

Next time I'm going to tell them betting against these nutty conspiracy theories is my latest retirement plan. At the rate they're popping up, and proving to be false, I should be retired before I reach 50!

And about refugees? Have you seen the pictures??? Young and bodied men with minimal background checks!!! Their spouse (opposite gender of course, no marrying computers for them) picked some up for their church to help and there were very few women or children!!!
It was an amazing display of the rw talking points, but that people of faith in prison thing was a new one for me.

(20,577 posts)I was told once that President Obama sold all our national parks to China. Turns out it was a hoax by Hal Turner (RW nutcase) that was picked up by many RW conspiracy sites as true. The story got worse with each website. I bet if you did a search you could find out the source.

(10,721 posts)Sorry, that's the best I can do.
Actually, they're simply the product of radical right wing rhetoric, including that which is spewed by their party's nominee for POTUS. The crazy things believed by large percentages of the US population is both laughable and depressing. Such as how more Louisiana Republicans blame Obama than blame the Bush Administration for the government's poor response to Hurricane Katrina. Or the number of folks who deny evolution, anthropogenic global warming, etc. And Young Earth Creationists, including people who have served on the US House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Or the anti-vaccination peeps. Or the number of people who think Obama is a Kenya-born Muslim. Or the people who think the likes of Alex Jones are speaking the truth.
And I've witnessed it on this site, too. When Sanders won the Indiana primary, there was a thread about how there was no mention in the media that Sanders had won. Post after post agreed with the OP in spite of me pointing out that there was a headline about the Sanders victory on every major news source imaginable. People believe what they want to believe.

(20,577 posts)and found a religious victim site that said Hillary Clinton wants people to abandon their faith. What she actually said was that cultural, religious traditions have to change for women to have free access to reproductive healthcare. (paraphrased) They do twist things to rile up their troops.

(14,853 posts)... that evangelicals are the largest supporters of Trump.
It blows my mind given his background (and current behavior too), but he's said some things about abortion and other issues in recent months to win their favor.
Wow. There's a bunch of people in the world who are obviously terrified by the prospect of mortality. That's the only explanation that I can offer for belief in souls and the like.
EDIT: By the way, I don't necessarily resent people if that belief gives them comfort.
