2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTrump campaign, in flames, sits down with the RNC today. Trump will not be atending.
OK, folks, time for another exciting round of "What's Wrong With This Picture?"
1). Everyone except Trump is sh*tting bricks over not only losing the Oval Office but the House, Senate, and oh yeah...with a Democratic majority, Hillary will nominate SCOTUS judges without stonewalling.
2). This is being called (in the article) the campaign's "Come To Jesus" moment, because the campaign needs the RNC, whether they want the RNC or not. It's an intervention with everyone present except the one person who will not listen to any of the feedback or ideas his drones bring back from the meeting.
3). Trump...who said earlier this week that if he's not elected, he'll go back to his "nice life" and will take a "long, long vacation," won't be present at what is being portrayed to the media as a "routine" meeting but what is, in fact, a triage session to save as many of the dying as possible.
Sounds like victory is at hand!
The request for the Orlando Ritz Carlton meeting originated with Trumps campaign, according to a source familiar with the broad details, and is being viewed by RNC officials as a sign that the campaign has come to grips with the difficulty it is having in maintaining a message and running a ground game.
They want to patch up a rift that just keeps unfolding, one source said. They finally realize they need the RNC for their campaign because, lets face it, there is no campaign.
Another person familiar with the meeting, a Republican operative who works with the campaign, said the planned gathering was a come-to-Jesus meeting. That source said that many Trump campaign staffers share the party officials frustrations with Trumps penchant for self-sabotaging rhetoric. Whats bothering people on the campaign is that they feel like theyre doing all the right things, but theyre losing every news cycle to Hillary and theres nothing they can do about it.
The campaign official said Trump, who is scheduled to travel to Pennsylvania on Friday, was not slated to attend the meeting, but that Karen Giorno, a senior adviser to the campaign, was.

If Trump comes out of this weekend acting any different, everyone will know it was because he was cowed by the RNC. And that won't help him with his crazy base at all.

(18,837 posts)The quote from yesterday is worth reading. He basically says "I tell the truth, but if that's not what people want to hear, I'll just go back to my beautiful life."
He already knows that any change in his demeanor would signal that he had been spoken to, and you never speak to the Donald, you only listen. This meeting will present a challenge to him. If he listens to the feedback at all, expect him to do the opposite, in a simple act of defiance.

You can talk to hie "people" all you want but the odds of getting Trump to behave himself are slim to non-existent. Short of putting him in a straight jacket and removing all electronic devices from him he will not be able to stop himself.
The fact that the Repubican Party accepts him as their nominee shows that the Republican Party is a threat to the welfare of this country. They are knowingly pushing to put someone in the WH that is totally unfit to serve. The democrats need to hang Trump around the neck of every Republican.

(60,332 posts)The RNC set this fire and now they cannot control it. They can lay down mandates, they can abandon him and condemn his actions (sort of), but they are getting burned by their connections to this raging pile of crap.
He is the Republican Nominee for President, that is a fact and he is on the Republican Ticket and with some luck and hard work on our part, he will drag down a lot of republicans down ticket.

(10,857 posts)I don't think Trump or the Republicans have nearly as much choice in the matter as they pretend to have. Trump pretty clearly violated the Logan Act, the Espionage Act, and political violence laws. About half of Title 18 of the U.S. Code.
I'll bet that the two groups won't be alone in the room, and I'm pretty certain that the Trump people will be too dumb to keep quiet about who else is there: an alphabet soup of counterintelligence and law enforcement figures.
I think the RNC will tell Trump's people that sometime around 4pm Priapus is going to officially call a meeting of the RNC for August 22. I think the FBI is going to tell Trump's people that unless he gets out, the investigations will go forward and charges of collaboration with a foreign power will eventually be levied, and that if he doesn't bail now, he loses absolutely everything. I think there will be people present who point out that if Trump bails tonight, at the lowest ebb of the news cycle and behind the smoke screen of the Olympics, he has the best possible chance to save his reputation, wealth and freedom.
I think Trump will take the deal.
But a big part of me hopes that I am completely wrong, and that he stays in it long enough to drive a stake through the Republican heart.
