2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat I Believe: Trump must be crushed. Not just beaten, broken.
He needs to lose in a landslide.
Trump isn't just mentally unstable. He's not just an epic egoist. He's not merely a narcissist.
Donald Trump is a classic "strong man"
He would, as President, attempt to operate as he does now and how he always has- as a brutish dictator, who believes only in his own supremacy.
He has already done incalculable damage. I mean that literally. We cannot, as of yet, fully calculate the damage he's incurred.
I don't know what kind of damage he could do as President, how far he could take it, how much he could get away with, but I don't want to find out.
As a nation, we need to repudiate Trump and those who follow him as completely as possible.
That's why I'll phone bank for HRC.
She'll win, but he needs to be crushed. The republican party needs to be crushed and put together again- hopefully by people with some degree sanity and integrity.
Donald Trump is toxic. His followers beliefs are toxic. It's difficult to find any humanity in Trump. Nothing beyond "I want..., me, me, me".
Trump is toxic in a way that far exceeds Bush or Reagan. I believe he'd actually try to use nuclear weapons.
Mentally unstable combined with a lack of humanity is about as dangerous a combination as can be imagined.
Like a grotesque Pandora, he has further opened a box that was cracked open by President Obama daring to President while black. And that's just one box.
Force and violence are unpleasant realities, but when they are in the forefront, we lose everything- to paraphrase E.M. Forster.
Donald Trump embodies force and violence, brutish power and precious little else.

(26,260 posts)That would be some interesting mind spew to read.
If things go the way they are currently trending, I could see the election being all but officially called for Hillary Clinton, before 11pm, eastern standard time.
I have this secret hope that someone, who is silently disaffected in his campaign, will secretly film him watching the returns and then release it. I also believe I won't bother waiting up for him to concede because that's going to be a struggle for him, and I don't really know if he's capable of admitting defeat.
Can the GOP concede, even if he doesn't?

(22,035 posts)When he loses the election, and if he gives a concession speech, I want to see it first-hand. It will be a unique moment in this jackass's life and will mark the beginning of the end of this sorry excuse of a human being. It will be a sight to behold.

I always have that bottle of something bubbly ready for popping, and it seems a shame to re-cork any leftovers.
I just have the feeling that he is not going to go down without a fight, no matter how big the landslide may be.

(23,097 posts)He'd be ordering his supporters to storm the ballot places, steal the discs, do whatever is needed to throw out and disrupt the "stolen" (in his view) election. The question is will his staff or the RNC stop him from that foolishness or will this end in chaos?

(56,828 posts)He'll rant and rave about Crooked Hillary rigging the election, and he'll threaten to sue every state elections commission/secretary of state where he lost. He'll also threaten to sue leading members of the media - CNN, NY Times, Washington Post, etc. He'll sue Meredith McIver for plagiarizing Michelle Obama, Corey Lewandowski, Paul Manafort, Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, etc, etc.
Meanwhile, the country will move on while he's stamping his feet in a childish temper tantrum and his lawsuits will be laughed out of court.
The revolution from his followers will peter out from embarrassment when he gets 30% of the vote, and in 20 years, there will be nobody around that will actually admit to being a Trump voter.

(22,035 posts)I'm with you. Donald Trump must lose by an historic amount. His loss should be so huge that it ends the Republican stranglehold on our country.
As an added bonus, Mr. Trump's loss should destroy him. I want him crushed and completely ruined. He is, as you wrote, toxic. He's also profoundly stupid and is the living example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. He is remarkably incurious and ill-informed. His ego is so overpowering that he's insufferable.
After he loses the election, his trial for Trump University will get underway. One of the cases is based on the RICO statutes and, if convicted, he could face jail time. Like I said, I want him destroyed and gone from our collective consciousness.
Donald Trump is an idiot and so is anyone who votes for him.

(10,252 posts)Like a heart attack. He doesn't like to lose. Already the GOP wants to ditch him as a candidate. A fake heart attack would be the perfect excuse to opt out of the race. Of course Mike Spence would be pretty easy to beat if there were enough time to inform voters about the dangers of a Spence presidency. I guess around Oct 1 would be the very latest for the GOP to put up a new candidate.

(10,252 posts)I doubt that he will be able to graciously concede on election night. Remember how gracious Al Gore was in his concession speech? No way will Trump be able to do likewise. I predict that Trump will far far surpass Nixon's "You won't have Richard Nixon to kick around any more" sore loser withdrawal. I must confess that I feel a little glee at the prospect of seeing Trump experience the humiliation that's heading his way come election night. Totally his own making however. I also imagine that HRC will have something gracious to say to Republicans, because she is a very classy lady.

Hitler committed suicide and finally gave his Church sufficient reason to excommunicate him - (murdering millions just didn't have sufficient weight with them). Trump is really a bad guy. We just haven't actually experienced the horrors he could inflict on our country let alone on us Democrats and progressives. His call to harm Hillary was very predictive of what he would do to us. He really should be held legally accountable for it. We should not let the American people forget that he got away with inciting an assassination. He comes very close to fascists, nazis and other right wing extremists by that act.

(90,662 posts)Obama, according to a very vocal faction at DU, "failed" to deliver on so many promises he never actually made that the number of groups who allegedly were "thrown under the bus" by Obama his own self got to be uncountable.
That created, incidentally, it's own kind of echo chamber in the main fora of DU. Those of us who genuinely liked the man and his character and were willing to wait for events to unfold ended up hanging out in the BOG for a good part of the last 7 years.
Long before this date, and despite the intractable opposition of the House, Senate, and media, Obama's accomplishments began to rack up. The actual promises he made were ticked off the list. Those of us who understood his mindset could see the incremental steps that were being taken were enormously significant in laying the solid foundation for the final outcome -- for instance, on gay marriage. We celebrated in the BOG.
Out in GD... well, sometimes the claim that one doesn't have an echo chamber seems a little hollow.
So, don't worry. Unless Skinner really means to keep the new TOS in place after HRC is sworn in, I expect to spend a lot of time over in the HRC Room. This, of course, is just my ironic take on the culture here, based on 14 years' experience.

(3,284 posts)The real problem for America, isn't Trump.
Can you guess what it is?
It is the tens of millions of people who passionately support him.
They, or their families, in millions of cases, have been hurt by an economy that favors
investors, bankers and corporations. In addition, these folks' emotions and perceptions have been
twisted like pretzels by the racist-tinged, highly-manipulative, NON-STOP avalanche of
venal, dishonest BS that is FoxNooz, vicious hate-radio talk-show hosts, and the hideous RW media
in general.
In addition, the racist fringe of America has joined in, with an ugly enthusiasm for attacking civil rights.
Put 'em all together, and you've got the "Trumpers".
The real Frankenstein's Monster is this group of many millions of enraged, and very confused and hateful Americans
who will only be frustrated further by Trump's defeat. They are not going anywhere.
They will, if history is to be any lesson for us, choose more and more extreme representatives to insert their hopes, fears and hatreds into, in an escalating pattern, possibly culminating in a future candidate far worse than Trump.
A solid Progressive agenda put forth by the Democratic Party, strongly and persistently, that truly helps the US middle class and working class to recover some sense of economic security,
earning power and HOPE, would go a considerable way towards eroding and moderating this angry sub-group,
and reducing both their numbers and their intensity.
But if both parties continue their intensely pro-corporate/pro-big-business course on economic policies, IMO,
things will continue to escalate and tilt frighteningly rightward.
In the classic example of Nazi Germany, the Nazi Party only got 37% of the vote. That may not be as many
as the "Trumpers" may be right now, in America. In 1930s Germany, The rest of the citizenry were pulled, or dragged, along, ultimately, by this minority, to disaster.
With the economic collapse Germany endured, that was all it took (37%) to bend the country to the extreme rightwing.
If that collapse could have been somehow lessened or neutralized for the majority of working people,
the 3rd Reich may never have come to power.
There will always be extremist groups and candidates, but history show us clearly:
Economics matter.
Bad economics clearly empowers tyranny and oppression. This a major lesson of History.
It behooves us to heed that in America, at this critical juncture.
A bad economy for working people, combined with a common sense of citizen helplessness in trying to change it,
empowers tyrants every time.
FoXNooz and the toxic US RW media ain't going anywhere (except maybe Hell).
The milions of angry, confused "Trumpers" will
still be searching, as drug-addicts do, for ever more potent sources of intoxication.
If the "bad whiskey" of past Republicans who damaged America, like Reagan and Dubya, has given way to the "cocaine" of Trump, then, we must ask-------if Trump fails,
what future candidate will be this group's heroin? Or crack?
Or meth?
If either party does not step-up to save America's middle class, the Trumpers will just get more and more extreme,
as will the "leaders" they are likely to put up, endangering our future, as much or MORE, as Trump endangers us now.
