He was speaking to white Americans, reassuring them that he's not really a racist and they won't be racists either if they vote for him.

Keep in mind, half the country doesn't vote. As such, they don't really get polled either. Those are the people Trump is speaking to.

I wouldn't pay any attention to polls, good or bad. Everyone has already made up their mind who they're going to vote for, if they were to vote at all. It's getting them to the voting booth that will decide the victor.
