Related: About this forumIf the race is close William Weld might endorse Hillary
Bill Weld could be a hero--instead of a Nader--if he renounces his own Libertarian candidacy and endorses/campaigns for HRC. Stay tuned.
He could be our Willy Brandt who became a revered figure in the post war and democratic Germany.

(99,711 posts)He is a friend of the Clintons. Bill appointed him as Ambassador to Mexico but Jesse Helms nixed it. He also served on the House Judiciary Committee during the Watergate impeachment inquiry with Hillary.
I am 100% certain he prefers Clinton to Trump, like any patriot, left, right or center.

(22,012 posts)Gary Johnson pretty well because I used to compete with him in tris. I was thinking of asking him to do that. Now maybe I will. (voting and volunteering for Clinton/Kaine).

(3,335 posts)He said that if his staying in the race helps Trump, he'll drop out. He doesn't want to do anything that will help Trump win. Good for him for having some sense of decency. He is to be applauded.

(52,308 posts)In the 1990 governor's race in Massachusetts. He ran as a republican against David silber, who, despite running as a democrat, was authoritarian, to the right of Attila the Hun. Weld was a republican but the kind of liberal republican that no longer exists.
Strange election. I couldn't vote for silber the nut job. Come to think of it, he was kind of a democratic version of trump in some ways.
Anyway, weld himself wasn't terrible, but of course he appointed typical right-wing republicans, so I was none too happy about that.
Would be interesting if weld actually endorses a democrat!

(5,624 posts)In a statement on Sunday afternoon, Weld responded:
Gary Johnson and I will campaign with all our strength to make that case to the American people from now until November 8th. Under no circumstances will our energies be diverted from our goal of winning the election and serving our country.
Weld attributed Bernsteins reporting to wishful thinking on the part of the two-party duopoly.

FURTHER DOWN IN THE ARTICLE JOHNSON SAYS -
Johnson said on Reliable Sources that 70% of America right now doesnt even know Im in the race.
Johnson and Weld will receive a close-up on the most-watched news program in the country, CBSs 60 Minutes, on Sunday night.
He said on CNN that the two-party structure in the United States needs to be ruined.
They have done this to themselves. They have become so polarized. Their only agenda is to kill each other.
anyway. That's what this means in political speak.

I don't seem him becoming 'revered' for endorsing HRC. Who would revere him for that?

(54,436 posts)Brandt was revered for fleeing the Nazis during the second world war and hiding out from them in Norway, which Nazi Germany occupied, and would have executed Brandt if they had caught him. Even his later boozing and womanizing couldn't erase that from his legacy.
It would be nice if Weld endorsed Hillary, but I don't think it rises to the level of risking life and limb for patriotic purposes.
