Trump Suggests Arresting Magazine Publishers

Donald Trump took aim at “magazines” and other media that publish instructions on how to make explosive devices, CNN reports.

Said Trump: “So I see the other day, and they’re all talking about it so wonderfully because it’s called freedom of the press — where you buy magazines and they tell you how to make the same bombs that you saw. I would — now people will go crazy, they’ll say Trump is against freedom of the press. I’m totally in favor of freedom of the press. But how do you allow magazines to be sold — these are magazines that tell you, from step one, go to the store and buy such-and-such, right?”

He added: “Those people should be arrested because they are inciting violence, OK.”

This issue has been around since the mid-seventies when a magazine proposed publishing how to make a hydrogen bomb. The Progressive went to the U.S. Supreme Court but the matter was not decided. However, the article was published.

I remember how interested, though, I was to move to the SE and find that ammonium nitrate could still be purchased retail in large bags. I automatically started looking around for dynamite to go with it that used to be available in every California farm supply store. Bleach we always have at home, of course, an extra bottle in case of emergency, though it's meant for treating water.

When are the paranoid, so-called Second Amendment protectionists going to realize that authoritarian, proto-fascist Trump would disarm them? They love to conjure specters of train cars full of conservatives on one-way journeys but are too stupid to realize they really need to fear themselves.

In the time it takes an intelligent person to consider multiple viewpoints, analyze possible outcomes, choose a position and express it clearly, Trump only manages to muster a few disconnected thoughts, counting on handlers to puck out what thay would prefer he'd said.

To me a magazine is a physical entity - print on paper and distributed to the public - but I don't think that is what Trump is talking about. If the such a physical magazine were being published in this country, or any civilized country its distribution could be halted.

But the magazines we are talking about are on line - particularly the on line magazine "Inspire" which Wikipedia describes as follows:

Inspire is an English language online magazine reported to be published by the organization al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The magazine is one of the many ways AQAP uses the Internet to reach its audience. Numerous international and domestic extremists motivated by radical interpretations of Islam have been influenced by the magazine and, in some cases, reportedly used its bomb-making instructions in their attempts to carry out attacks.[2] The magazine is an important brand-building tool, not just of AQAP, but of all al-Qaeda branches, franchises and affiliates.[3]

So would Trump have us do - arrest those who put the magazine on the internet - doesn't he understand that we, and the other countries in the world would have already that if could? Doesn't he know that we are working with internet companies to keep this trash from getting in the hands of home inspired terrorist?

This is just another example of how clueless Trump really is.

and powers of critical listening left him with pictures of bearded guys picking through glossy magazines at Borders, deciding what kinds of bombs they want to make that week.

His intelligence briefings. I wonder if they are written to a 4th grade reading/attention level or just a bunch of poster-board graphics with two or three words each.

Because we have gone down this path before. Only this time it was far more serious than "inciting violence". It was how to make an H-bomb.
