At the lack of postings on this thread today paying homage to those whose unselfish service have protected us and our way of life. I believe all Americans should honor veterans on their special day. There are more than 24 million veterans in the United States. Each one of these men and woman have sacrificed something for our country. They have given us so much. They have sacrificed themselves for our freedom and happiness. All we need to do is show them that they have our respect and care. It is so simple to write a letter and thank someone who has given us our freedom. We can go to a parade. We can visit a VA hospital and talk to a veteran. None of these small acts can compare to what they did for us, but these acts help show our veterans their sacrifices are acknowledged and we are grateful.Veterans Day provides us with an opportunity to appreciate the simple duties and paramount accomplishments of American veterans. I know that they are the architect of American nationalism and that they hold a more zealous connection to this nation than the majority of ordinary citizens. Veterans set aside their personal lives, goals, and ambitions in order to serve. This unselfish commitment to the United States is unparalleled by any other service and without their bravery, the American dream would perish.
Veterans Day is only one day in November, yet every day that we take advantage of our opportunities as Americans, we should pay homage to those whose unselfish service protected us and our way of life. These people, who were willing to give of themselves to accomplish a goal for the good of many, are veterans. They are a population that is very deserving of praise and admiration for all that they did. Veterans are special people that understand what the Stars and Stripes are all about. They know that for each star there are millions of people that needed their strength. This compelled them to serve. Even in the heat of battle with the possibility of imminent death lingering over their heads, veterans were fighting to protect liberty and justice for all. That is true honor, a concept foreign to many in today's society. It is however, a concept that rings true still today and that should be cherished as part of our American culture and put on a pedestal right next to our national treasures. In this way veterans gave the greatest gift and I for one am going to log off of my computer now and go out and find a veteran and thank him or her for their service to our great nation and I am urging everyone else on this thread to do the same!

(35,015 posts)After telling us how appalled you are, I couldn't really take the rest of your post seriously.
If you doubt how much DUers appreciate our veterans (many of us ARE veterans), and are grateful for their sacrifices, then you sure as hell don't know us very well.

(12,448 posts)The very best way to support the troops is to stop sending them to murder and be murdered to protect corporate profits. The next best way is to take care of the damage done to them when they do come back.
Posting nationalist propaganda on a message board doesn't help them at all.

(46,192 posts)DUers have for years sought better treatment for vets, better benefits and supportive health care upon their return.
Even while often opposing wars that vets are fighting in, DUers have a great record of wanting to do right by the troops.
DUers have posted in horror at the things that our troops get subjected to.

I've been here for just a short while, but have seen nothing but supportive posts for vets.
Who appointed you judge and jury of the posters here?

(48,181 posts)This is actually "armistice day" for those of us old enough to remember its origins. WWI introduced "industrialized slaughter" to warfare. In one day at the Battle of the Somme there were 68,000 casualties.
"I know that they are the architect of American nationalism"
No, really our veterans are the victims of American Nationalism, and I refuse to celebrate mindless nationalism. I support veterans benefits, not flag waving and mind numbingly patronizing utterances of "thank you for your service".

(885 posts)On DU today and on other days. As an Army veteran (2004-2010), I'm not appalled or offended by anyone here. I come from a military family. Father (Vietnam - Army), Grandfather (Army), Great-grandfather (Army), Uncle (Navy), Father-in-law (Marine Corps), Grandfather (Army)...
Your concern is noted though...

Francisco Barraco, my Great-grandfather. He immigrated from Sicily and voluntarily fought for our armed forces. 38th US Infantry WWI veteran. I had the honor of growing up around him and he lived to be over 103 years old.

(1,663 posts)Right now I am on a history mission.
My father gave me a photo of my grandfather during WWI. He is with two army buddies and they are standing in front of statues that look plastic. I believe it was a studio photo for soldiers to send back home from Europe. My grandfather was with the all black infantry and served with the French is all I know. Black American soldiers could not fight with other Americans.
I am trying to find out where that picture was taken.
My father died several years ago and none of his siblings know. There was a huge fire that destroyed military records in the seventies. I have been given a few alternate routes and if all else fails I will contact the History Detectives on PBS
with your search. I've loved searching through my families history and pulling what records can be found. Like you, I've run into troubles with the fire and destroyed records.
It is interesting and fun.

(16,211 posts)may I say that the move in the country in the last several years to GLORIFY servicemen and women is scary. We are being blinded by the worship of the veteran and ignoring the acts that led to creating same.

(23,664 posts)2012 is the 50th year since I was discharged and I feel I was more than fairly rewarded for my service by getting my education partially paid for and being able to buy my first home with no money down.
That's the kind of recognition that really means something to me. I don't need to have my ass kissed for doing something I didn't want to do in the first place.

You might wait til tonight and tomorrow before you criticize things you have no knowledge about., I have been here for a while and I know how much vets and active duty troops are honored here
