Gary Johnson Can't Name Favorite Foreign Leader
Introducing a "lightning round" during Wednesday evening's Libertarian town hall on MSNBC Wednesday night, host Chris Matthews said, "This is where we have fun, and maybe make some news." Third-party candidate Gary Johnson ended up doing the latter of the two when he was asked who his favorite world leader is and drew a complete blank. Johnson's running mate, Bill Weld, attempted to save him by jumping in to name recently deceased former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres as his favorite, but Matthews wouldn't let Johnson off the hook, asking him to name any foreign leader who is currently alive. "Any continent, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, name a foreign leader that you respect," Matthews implored.
"I guess I'm having an Aleppo moment," Johnson said, referring to his embarassing incident on Morning Joe last month when he admitted he did not recognize the name of the city at the center of Syria's refugee crisis. He mentioned the former president of Mexico, but was not able to say which one he meant. It was only after Weld helped him by naming a few that he confirmed he was talking about Vicente Fox, who has been one of Donald Trump's biggest critics. Weld did not hesitate in choosing German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

(2,542 posts)"Name any world leader you respect" should not be something that an active politician running for Leader of the Free World should fumble like Johnson did.

(11,605 posts)I have a lot of friends who are libertarians, and most of them are very unhappy about Johnson as their nominee and are frustrated that on a year when they have a chance to make some headway they have such an inept nominee. I don't agree with Libertarians on fiscal issues but I respect them more than Republicans because at least they are consistent, and I think they have a unique point of view that deserves to be aired even if I think they are nuts in a lot of ways. It's unfortunate that in a year when a lot of Republicans are open to voting Libertarian they have such a clown as a nominee.

(22,976 posts)I mean, these questions are pretty basic stuff. And the New Yorker recently wrote that Johnson didn't know who Harriet Tubman was! Harriet Tubman, for god's sake!
It makes me wonder if Johnson is losing some cognition. He can't seem to switch on the mechanism for recalling for basic information, assuming there's anything for him to recall at all. Whew.
