Republicans to Trump: Keep Lewinsky out of it

GOP senators say Trump should focus on the economy, not Bill Clinton's infidelities.

Republican lawmakers have some advice for Donald Trump and his surrogates as they openly mull bringing up President Bill Clinton's infidelity at the next presidential debate: Don’t do it.

GOP senators who’ve finally grown more comfortable with Trump warned in interviews Wednesday that descending into Bill Clinton’s sexual past is dangerous territory for the GOP nominee, who has his own less-than-pristine history when it comes to his commitment to the sanctity of marriage. Better to stick to, say, the economy, the pols suggested.

“That’s a distraction away from the high ground he’s got. I think talking about the economy and about how the Democrats have failed the economy and the working poor is our high ground,” said Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.), who’s turned into a major Trump supporter. “All of this [about Bill Clinton] really doesn’t matter. People back home are concerned about the economy and security issues.”

“I”ve never been in favor of that and I’m still not,” added Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.). “It’s a distraction to the big issues out there that we’ve got to face.”

Congressional Republicans have a lot riding on Trump’s debate performances: The closer he stays to Clinton in the polls, the more likely the GOP is to hold the Senate and avoid heavy losses in the House. Conversely, if Trump raises Bill Clinton's infidelities and it backfires, Democrats may well start salivating anew about taking over the Senate.

Much work to do, but pretending that the economy is terrible right now is just stupid.

but GDP growth is still about 2% lower than other periods of recovery and growth.

In aggregate it appears slightly lower than G.W. Bush's economy (obviously before it fell off the cliff). Growth is quite a bit lower than during Clinton's presidency.

The money is not getting into the hands of the middle class and below. Wages are being tamped down, benefits re shrinking, and the bosses are raking in all the cash.

Sec. Clinton needs to talk more about growing the income of average Americans.

I thought he was just high.

The truth is Trump can't speak to real issues because
he has no real plans. He just walks around like a crazy man
proclaiming he can win. He just has no idea what to really do.
You don't have to look too hard to realize Trump's really quite a loser.

The job bleeding stopped and the economy turned around under the Democratic President. The GOP has been the hindrance.

People need to stop an think where they were economically in 1999 and what happened to them by 2008. We now know that housing bubble had more to do with vulture bankers and realtors than with peoples inability to pay for housing. Even wealthy people can get cheated. The difference is they have more ways to overcome and seek restitution.

Paying for a roof over your head is the top priority of most working poor and middle-income families. They are not bad credit risks even if they have to work two or more jobs. But when the system crashes down on them suddenly and refuses to ameliorate the crash, that is when they have difficulty. I know a lot of people (ok 4) who could have saved their homes from forfeiture had they been able to just cut their interest rate in half at the time. Obama came along with programs to do that and to help them but by then it was too late for them.

The idea that Democrats FAILED them is not true and should be challenged at all times.

The do-nothing republican congress has done everything it can to stifle this recovery. I'd like to see the DSCC and the DCCC to drive this message home. A Democratic congress will really help a President H. Clinton improve the lives of all Americans.
