President Barack Obama said that the beginnings of Donald Trump's unlikely rise to power can be found in the Republican party's embrace of Sarah Palin in 2008 when she ran for vice president, according to an interview with New York Magazine published Monday.
"I see a straight line from the announcement of Sarah Palin as the vice presidential nominee to what we see today in Donald Trump, the emergence of the Freedom Caucus, the tea party, and the shift in the center of gravity for the Republican Party," Obama said in the wide-ranging interview with New York's Jonathan Chait. "Whether that changes, I think, will depend in part on the outcome of this election, but it's also going to depend on the degree of self-reflection inside the Republican Party."

(22,899 posts)I shudder to think. Perhaps the pendulum has swung as far as it can in that direction-- I just can't imagine a worse candidate than cheato.
I hope the repukes do a major regrouping and start examining what led them here. Pipe dream

(3,168 posts)The moment she accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists" was the moment that all of this over-the-top, ridiculous bullshit started. We also have to remember that Obama is the first president of the Facebook era, when every racist, bigoted asshole suddenly learned that there are a ton of people out there who think just like them! I remember that I had such high hopes for this country when Obama was elected, and the Republicans have destroyed all that. They are treasonous bastards.

(4,928 posts)The normalization of latently ignorant dangerous and unqualified started with the desperation of John McCain. There is no Donald Trump without Sarah Palin.
At least voters rejected her. I think the dumbing down may be so far gone that Trump is a real possibility. And I do lay a good share of the blame on John McCain.

(870 posts)This might have been answered elsewhere. But I find it rather curious that one of the very first people to ever endorse Trump is not one of his surrogates. Why is that? The bar is kinda low already with Katrina Pierson.
