Trump lectures Nevadans how to say state name

New York native Donald Trump is lecturing his supporters in Nevada that their state is correctly pronounced “Neh-VAH-da.”

The Republican presidential candidate performed an exaggerated form of his preferred pronunciation from the stage of a rally in Reno. He declared that “nobody says it the other way.” But the confused silence from the crowd mixed with a few shouts of disagreement indicated that quite a few Nevadans pronounce their home state “Neh-VAD-uh.”

American Bridge, a group that supports Hillary Clinton, immediately put up a web video declaring that Trump was “looking like an idiot” for getting the name wrong.

thank goodness he used in a sentence (and I'll use that term loosely) because I wouldn't of know what the hell he was saying...which I guess is pretty normal anyway LOL.

I'll respect the right of the locals to pronounce their state name any way they want to. But you folks got to be realistic. The "Ne-væ-da" pronunciation is, after all, a corruption of the original Spanish pronunciation. And saying "Ne-vah-da" is much closer to the original.

I think it's a regional accent thing. I'm in Connecticut.

Putting that much emphasis on the middle syllable and giving it a long "a" sound feels unnatural. Like I'm putting on a western accent from a movie.

I'm not dumb enough to lecture the state residents on the "proper" way to pronounce it, though.
