Ben Stein: Trump must go

Ben Stein: Trump must go

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ben-stein-trump-must-go/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab6j&linkId=29729073

This is a nightmare.

But it’s time for Donald Trump to go back to Trump Tower. Time for Mike Pence to move to the top of the ticket. Time for Marco Rubio, or my favorite, Lindsay Graham, to move to the Veep spot.

I’m not fickle. I have been a conservative in Hollywood for 40 years, and it’s cost me plenty. No matter. Loyalty is sacred to me.

But I am a Republican, and we are supposed to represent a high moral standard. We are the party of Dwight Eisenhower and of Ronald Reagan, whose charisma was based on dignity. We’re the party of George W. Bush, who made terrible mistakes, but whose fundamental decency was never in doubt.

Now comes Donald Trump.

3. Ben Stein complains that being a conservative has cost him plenty?

Being a conservative never hurt Fred Thompson, but then he was a good actor. Tom Selleck - good actor. Clint Eastwood - good director. Kelsey Grammer - pretty good actor. Gary Sinise - good actor. Angie Harmon - good actor. And I know there are more.

Maybe the real problem is, Ben Stein is a one trick pony. "Bueller? Bueller?"

5. It's all a matter of taste, and they are good enough to be working

I always liked Fred Thompson, both in the movies and Law and Order. And it's hard to deny that Clint Eastwood is a pretty good director, although I never liked him, much, as an actor.

And I did like Kelsey Grammer as Frazier. Gary Sinese - yup - like him.

Angie Harmon isn't my cup of tea. I don't like voice, at all, and her delivery always sounds flat, to me. But she is continually working. So all of this goes against Stein's claim that it's his conservatism that keeps him from getting work.

7. Being a conservative is what saved his career

Without it he was never more than 3rd rate at anything. It's not as if anyone who isn't already predisposed to his warped ideas is buying what he is selling.

10. Even at that there don't seem to be any speeches worth remembering

He writes exactly as he talks in a very monochromatic and boring tone. It's actually his defining feature as a 3rd rate actor.

11. Actually he's been anti-Trump pretty much from the beginning

He even floated the idea of voting for a Democrat early on. So while he might be an exceptional putz, at least he's been reasonably consistent on Trump.

12. Well sure. But now he wants to short-circuit the GOP primary process and stick another

awful hard-core religious right godbagger (who also happens to be another creationist) at the top of the ticket?

Plus he's concerned about the fortunes of his precious GOP

Fuck off, Ben. This is what you get. Go ahead and vote for Hillary if you don't like it.

13. So at worst he's a political opportunist not unlike many other GOPhers

Albeit one who attempts to make intellectual arguments for anti-intellectual ideas. I suspect what bothered him the most about Trump was there was never going to be a place for him inside a Trump administration and for someone who is facing an ever withering audience his well deserved obscurity seems to be closer than ever.
