Romney's return

He will appear relatively "normal" in 2020. He's laid the groundwork already by calling out drumph.

Despite his magic pants religion BS

2. The Republicans already had two 'normals' this year, Jeb and Kasich, look what happened.

Conservatives love the crazy right now. They have only gotten more crazy because a black guy is President. Does anybody seriously think they will calm down when a woman, who is also a Clinton, is President?

Come on now! Rmoney is dead and will remain dead in 2020.

David Duke or any other, out-of-the-closet racist. Conservatives have been flirting with racists since this nation was born. They have run racists for office at all levels in the past and given today's Conservative movement, they will do it again.

Its a damn shame they took over the Republican party, once upon a time, they were the progressives and liberals in America. Lincoln must be spinning in his grave all day every day.

15. Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty seems more realistic for the GOP at this time.

He's racist, misogynist AND an evangelical Christian! He's also a reality TV personality who is poorly-informed.

Conversely, I would be very curious to see polling of someone like Kanye West among Democrats, including which groups would be dumb enough to support him. He supposedly wants to run for POTUS in 2020 too.

Why stop at Robertson and West? Why not go all in with the swamp fishermen and Honey Boo Boo?

He'd be the dream candidate for the Trump wing of the party. Unlike Trump, he actually believes the things that right-wing evangelicals believe.

I read this article from The Atlantic awhile back, with Robertson and West both mentioned as hypothetical party nominees in 2020:
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/07/how-american-politics-went-insane/485570/

I assumed the author mostly pulled those names out of thin air, but I later discovered that both "celebrities" announced their plans to run in 2020!

Between the two of them, I foresee Robertson having a real chance! Again...

Admittedly, he looks good for his age and appears to be in good physical shape. But the fact is Willard will turn 73 in 2020. He may decide it's not worth his time, unless he pulls a Bob Dole and vows to only serve one term.

a party worth presiding over by then.

It's not in very good shape at the moment.

It's cracking into bits as we speak, in fact. The rage heads for Trump will want their way. The (relatively) calmer "mainstream" faction will try to advance Ryan (and Ryan will gladly consent to this). And the extreme fundie Right will be howling about one thing or another, as they always do.

The GOP base is a freak show. I think it's more likely to continue to be one than to be unified by any one figure. And I think Romney's time has passed.

And, without the crazies, I don't think they have sufficient numbers to still be a major party.

I'm a little curious, a little scared, about what the fallout of all this is going to be.

Frankly, he's smart enough to know that 2012 was his shot, and now it goes to someone younger.

That someone, unfortunately, will be Raphael Cruz.
