I don't understand why some on the left think that a trump presidency would be harmless

Eric L. Wattree to Hal Ginsberg Facebook post

THE TRUMP THREAT A MYTH

<snip>
If Trump does win, he won't be able to bust a grape. If you think that Barack Obama hit a brick wall when he became president, just imagine what Trump will face. He’s a buffoon and one of the most hated politicians in the history of American politics, so he has absolutely NO support worth mentioning. Where Obama only faced a hostile Republican congress, Trump would be facing both a hostile Republican and Democratic congress, and a hostile public as well. So all he’d be able to do is sit up in the Oval Office and play with himself. As a result, the worse thing that he would bring to the country is continued gridlock.

know-it-alls who think they have a direct line to the future. If they're so prescient, why didn't they predict Donald Trump in the first place?

No one can possibly know exactly what would happen if Trump were elected. He's dangerous. He might turn out to be ineffective and impotent. On the other hand, he might be the next Hitler. It's not really a risk I'm willing to take.

11. I'm betting he'd be more Hitler than simply ineffectual

he has a LOT of enemies to get back at, and he wants revenge, no doubt. There's no way he would suddenly start respecting the constitution either.

With Trump and a R House and Senate and then SCOTUS there would be nothing and noone that would stop whatever madness he schemes up.

are really going to have to clean out the Aegean stables after the election. We have a lot of angry white guys on the """"Left"""" who either low-key hate marginalized people, don't even understand socialist thought enough to effectively apply it, are just in it to be edgy, or some combination of the above.

Misogyny is a huge part of the Hillary hatred, but it's also partially not wanting to engage in actual politics with actual people because it would require them to give up ideological purity, and ideological purity is addictive because it enables people to feel like they are doing God's work to cleanse the world of Sin. Of course, only angry white middle class males have the luxury to think like this.

and those few women and POC who are wealthy enough--or believe they are wealthy and privileged enough--not to be in the way of a Trump cataclysm. Folks like Susan Sarandon come to mind.

But your analysis is otherwise spot on.

17. Because "some on the left" have been saying variations on the same things since 1980 if not before

"things will get so bad that then finally people will RISE UP, and then...." oh I dunno, overthrow oppressor man or some such thing...

I know I said that in 1980 as a young naive leftie. When, BTW, the left abandoned Jimmy carter in a big way and gave us Reagan.

Now - what we wouldnt give for a second Carter term and no Reagan.

Also the folly of this logic is that often in history things get so bad that people are downtrodden and defeated.. and barely surviving from day to day. And things go from bad to worse. Revolutions, optimism happens mostly in times of rising expectations.
