Ford was chosen as Nixon's vice-president after the one elected with him, Spiro Agnew, resigned (fraud and bribery charges, IIRC), then stepped up when Nixon himself resigned. Lost to Carter when he tried to run on his own.

Decent enough person, mostly a place-holder as president. As he said of himself, "I'm a Ford, not a Lincoln."
