Gun laws will never change in the U.S.. People simply refuse to stand up and fight for tighter gun laws. The gun lobby on the other hand will fight to the last drop of blood in their arsenal.

Americans, or at least a sizeable portion of them, like their guns and believe that if they're not committing a crime with them, that they shouldn't have to give them up.

And from a political standpoint, gun control isn't a long-lasting issue. Nobody wants to be kicked out of office for voting on a law that has a shaky, at best, chance of actually reducing violence.

Personally, if I had to scede the gun control issue to keep enough Democrats in office to keep abortion legal, keep furthering gay rights, civil rights, economic fairness and environmental issues, I'll do that.

I'm not going to go to war on this issue, and a lot of elected democrats aren't either, and republicans certainly aren't going to do anything.

So Milbank is right, it's status quo as usual.

Will there be one day when the climate might change? Possibly, but we're not even close to there right now. Even after this tragedy.

Unfortunately he's right. The Republicans hold the majority in the House and that alone is enough to kill any bill. Plus it would have to overcome a filibuster effort in the Senate.

And the House will probably never pass it. Hence the general freakout over the fiscal cliff crap.
