Harry Reid cites fathers suicide in gun debate
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid again took the Senate floor Tuesday morning to make a very personal plea for a vote on gun control legislation.
The Nevada Democrat mentioned the suicide of his father, who killed himself in 1972. Reid pointed out that as a state lawmaker he authored a bill to require waiting periods for handgun purchases.
In Nevada, if you purchase a handgun you have to wait three days to pick it up, Reid said. And it is believed that alone has saved the lives of many people. Sometimes people in a fit of passion will purchase a handgun to do bad things with it, Mr. President even as my dad did, killed himself. Waiting a few days helps.
It was the second day that Reid took to the floor to call for Republicans to drop their promises of a filibuster on gun legislation.

(10,751 posts)1. Good for him...
...it can't be easy to talk about something so painful and so personal in the middle of a high profile debate on a topic that inflames passions as much as this one does.
He has of course opened himself up to derogatory comments from the far right, and I'm sure we'll see them, just as we saw the tasteless comments about and towards the parents and loved ones of the Newtown victims.

(3,731 posts)2. Sen. Reid is being less than honest when he says there's a 3 day waiting period
for hand gun purchase.
The 3 day waiting period is for FIRST time hand gun purchase, after that, there is no waiting period.
