Poll: Markey Up 7 In Mass. Special Election

Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) earns the support of almost half of voters and claims a 7-point lead in the special U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts, according to a new poll released Thursday.

The poll, conducted by Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling on behalf of the League of Conservation Voters, showed 48 percent of likely Bay State voters indicating that they will vote for Markey while Republican nominee Gabriel Gomez trails with the support of 41 percent. League of Conservation Voters has endorsed Markey.

PPP's previous survey of the race — conducted shortly after the April 30 primary — showed Markey clinging to a mere 4-point margin. But Markey has shored up support from his Democratic base, according to PPP. In the previous poll, the longtime congressman had the support of 68 percent of in-state Democrats. Today, Markey enjoys the support of 77 percent of Massachusetts Democrats.

Even if Markey wins by a narrow margin (say 52-48 or 53-47), Republicans will see that as a moral victory that they did so well in the bluest state in the country.
