Virginia Republicans Panicking Over Their Choice for Lieutenant Governor

Archconservative pastor E.W. Jackson isn't the running mate Ken Cuccinelli had in mind.

A minister who compared gays to pedophiles and Planned Parenthood to the Klu Klux Klan is not the No. 2 candidate Republican Party reformers had in mind for the marquee race of 2013.

Neither did the top of the ticket, Republican gubernatorial nominee Ken Cuccinelli, who has been downplaying his own socially conservative record in favor of a more mainstream message focused on the economy.

So how in the world did archconservative African-American pastor E. W. Jackson cinch his party’s nomination for lieutenant governor of Virginia on Saturday night?

Blame Virginia’s quirky political process, a raucous convention speech and a racial undercurrent for vaulting Jackson—an also-ran in the 2012 Republican primary for the U.S. Senate—onto a stepping stone to the top job in one of the closely watched swing states in the country. Blame Cuccinelli, who steered the party away from holding a potentially more competitive primary and toward a convention that ensured his nomination but left the lieutenant governor’s slot up to only a few thousand hard-core activists to fill.

This is what the GOP has become. E.W. Jackson is the embodiment of their beliefs.
Why are they scared?

The reason Cuch has been moderating is because there is no path to victory for a Republican in a gubernatorial race in VA without at-least coming close to breaking-even in NoVA and the VA coast, both highly-educated, wealthy, socially-liberal areas which lean slightly fiscal-libertarian and pro-defense/pro-military. The "guns, god and gays" thing doesn't fly...most of these people don't care if gay people can get married or not as long as the USDoD buys more submarines, their taxes go down and job-creation occurs; god-talk comes off like a wingnut-klaxon and...well...guns they like. 1 out of 3 isn't going to win any tea-party ninny like Cooch an election though.

The not-so-good reverend is going over in areas of the state that Cuchinelli needs to contest like a methane-spewing flaming turd in the punch bowl. There ain't enough souls out in the Jesusland western 2/3 of the state of Virginia to balance out Fairfax, Arlington and Alexandria, Richmond and Virginia Beach.

I also hope that the DNC spends some money in the state. It would also be nice if Obama showed up at least once before the election.

Shame that he hates his own community. To dare to think for other african americans. Maybe they don't see it his way. But this man is what the base of the party is. Why should we expect anything different from the republican party.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, he's DLC, a centrist, blah, blah, blah. But consider the options, Cuccinelli and Jackson are downright scary. I pity Virginia if they win the election.

Some Republicans in the state are already nervous. One state GOP insider e-mailed me, almost despondent. “This Jackson nomination illustrates something that a lot of commentators don’t appreciate — this assumption on the part of some on the hard right that blacks will automatically respond to a black Republican, even one whose views have no intrinsic appeal to blacks.” He continued, “But what a sad, corrosive day for the party, from the specter of 8000 people choosing a statewide candidate, to Cuccinelli not having the basic sense to block it. And what a hideous position it puts so many of us in.”

Is that "God" working in mysterious ways?

I hope this is a gift to freaking Terry McAuliffe.

thanks DV
