Howard Dean Goes Off On National Review, The Daily Caller

TOM KLUDT 11:25 AM EDT, THURSDAY MAY 30, 2013
Former Democratic National Committee chairman and one-time presidential hopeful Howard Dean ripped a pair of conservative media outlets on Thursday, calling National Review a "a right-wing conservative nutcase" and The Daily Caller "propaganda organization."

Dean's harsh words came during an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," after co-host Mika Brzezinski read an excerpt from a column written by Rich Lowry, the editor of National Review, who blasted Attorney General Eric Holder. The former Vermont governor dismissed Lowry's argument, and accused National Review of mischaracterizing some of his recent comments on the attack in Benghazi, Libya.

“National Review is just silly,” he began his rant. “Who is going to take them seriously? It's a right-wing conservative nutcase. Let’s just be blunt about the National Review, right? They claimed last week that I said that the death of four Americans in Benghazi was a joke. What I said was that the investigation was a joke. This is crap. Who gives a damn? This is why I don’t read editorial pages 'cause I don’t give a damn what these people think.”

He was referring to a piece by National Review's Andrew Johnson, who led his article by noting that Dean "considers the controversy over Benghazi" to be a "joke" and "silly."

I love Howard Dean. And think there should be MORE Dems like him ! He does'nt sugar coat how he feels about the RIGHT WING and their RIGHT WING "NUT CASE" followers , that endorse the NUTINESS that these people are allowed to go around SPEWING on TV....SPEWING in Op-Eds....SPEWING on the freakin RADIO....and ignorant STUPID Legislators that take this CRAP into our WHITE HOUSE !!!! I say we need to get us an ALL-STAR team of folks that will go out into the media and BLAST these nuts at every opportunity they're given. Howard Dean & Alan Grayson would be my choice of an All-Star Tag-Team. The RIGHT and their LAB RATS... have never RESPECTED our President...his wife...or his GIRLS: with all the S!#t they SAY and DO. They're just a bunch of DISGUSTING bastards. And people with any COMMON SENSE.... should NOT give a rats-ass WHAT THEY THINK !!!!! Way to go Howard.

4. He just sent me a fundraising letter for my Senator Merkley who he calls a "progressive champion"...

And praised him as the guy trying to fix the filibuster, etc. I don't need Dean to tell me this, as I've contributed a lot to Merkley's campaign and will again once I get a new job after my contract ends tomorrow... Getting Merkley reelected in 2014 is a must. And the bigger the win we give him, perhaps the bigger mandate he will have to FINALLY get the filibuster rules changed then.

I joined the Democratic Party from being an independent on the day that Howard Dean took over the DNC as my symbolic gesture of support for him. Ultimately it will be people like Howard Dean, Senator Jeff Merkley, and others like Senator Elizabeth Warren that have the courage to fight off Citizen's United corrupting influences to restore this party running for us and not the 1%.

5. Who is that goofy woman, with her fake surprise at Dean's comments?

What Dean said shouldn't be all that remarkable. He's just stating the obvious.

Sometimes known here as Mika Mouse for her eyes-downcast demeanor in the presence of Joe Scarborough's bluster. Genetics being what it is, she has to have a brain in that pretty little head of hers, but she doesn't do much to display it, so my theory is that she is there for eye-candy.

I can't watch that show.

As for Dr. Dean, I hope he never switches to decaf. I got to shake his hand once on his presidential campaign trail, and he is a tightly wound little guy.

I still love the guy.

6. I liked it except for the last remark ...

"When I grew up, the Left had all the crazies, today, the Right has all the crazies." (Paraphrasing)

No, Governor, the Left has usually been spot on about things; throughout history, it's the Progressive Left that has more often than not been proven correct. The Left (and I'm talking about actual Leftists) have as their (and mine) moral imperative, the the good of society (and in an anarchist sense, the individual which is intertwined). The Right, historically speaking, has as its moral imperative, the good of the few, and the fewer, as profit, wealth, power, et cetera is their ultimate objective.

Sorry to nitpick that last statement.

The above, obviously, is a rough generalization; but I think is a good overview between goals of the Left vs. the Right.

7. Dean's defense of Holder was outstanding. I wonder why DU accepts it when he defends Holder

but not when other DU members defend him?

Nothing Dean has said is contrary with what many here who don't demonize Holder has stated.

Thanks, Dr. Dean!

8. I think there's a difference between defending the process of investigation of Holder...
Thu May 30, 2013, 12:53 PM
May 2013

... and defending Holder himself.

The same applies to Obama. The right wing is crazy the way they go after him, and need to be called out for the kind of lynch mob tactics they are using to do so. That doesn't mean that I completely support Obama in every instance, as there are many areas that Obama deserves criticism. You know if they succeed in trying to get impeachment hearings on Obama, they'll also be going after impeachment of Joe Biden as well. It would all be about trying to get Boehner in as president. And if they don't, they'll paint the Democrats as obstructionist if they don't convict him on impeachment, and even if they do convict him in the Senate, they'll paint the Senate as "obstructionist" in being the only cog in congress and the presidency which would stand in their way of getting legislation passed. Enough that some corporatist Democrats might vote with Republicans and get some really nasty stuff passed in that nasty alternate reality that they are dreaming of.

Not only do we need to defend the process that is using to defend Holder, we should be prepared to offer suggestions for Obama to replace him with if it is obvious that there are things he's done wrong later after investigations have happened that are *legitimate*. We need to be prepared to push Obama to do the right things on civil liberties and prosecutions of Wall Street, etc. and not just defend him as he keeps trying to make the "grand bargain" at our expense in his response to this nonsense. If Obama were to replace Holder with someone that really does do the right thing in terms of prosecuting Wall Street, etc. I bet that might really amp up his poll ratings, and then the Republicans might regret pushing on Holder to begin with and think twice before they pull the shotgun approach with too much crap being launched from the shotgun that will be thrown back in their face.
