2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumcheck in here if you think President Obama should NOT be impeached, even if you are mad as hell at
recent news.
There is more to find out here, and hopefully some changes will be made, but I, for one, refuse to kowtow to right winged, Carlyle Group posturing aimed at marginalizing my president.

(24,437 posts)What law(s) has he broken? What "high crimes and misdemeanors" is he alleged to have engaged in? While we might not like the NSA spying, it appears- unless there is much more to the story- that it was legally done with warrants, FISA Court, etc. under the terms of the law as it currently stands. No wrongdoing has been unearthed re: Benghazi, IRS, AP, etc. either, so.......

(22,143 posts)Bush should have been impeached. But he wasn't and so we're stuck with this bullshit.

(9,273 posts)But this crap has been going on for *years* and what's in the headlines now is yet another chapter in the Great Scandal Machine. Not enough to get the RWNJs foaming at the mouth, now they have to bring up the one issue that pisses off the Left, so we stay home (all goverment sucks!) in 2014 and let them continue their takeover of state governments. Gee, maybe we'll stay home enough so they can take over the Senate too.
We must focus on what's really important--taking back the States and Congress in 2014.

(35,356 posts)It's not a high crime. People just think anything that outrages them, legal or not, is a high crime. They lack perspective--"they" being "people." (Sometimes I wonder if I'm one. Or perhaps my serotonin levels shoud be checked?)
And how group dynamics work certainly makes the problem fester all the more.
As for marginalizing the President, you do a fine job. "My president," indeed. When the political opposition doesn't like him and says so, he's "the" President, the President of all Americans--but as soon as we get all defensive and protective of our li'l Barrykins he's "ours." Just like * was "their" President but seldom described as "ours," and most emphatically rejected as being "the President of all Americans." More silliness and accentuating group boundaries.

(10,893 posts)our RW lurkers have been getting massive erections this past week at the sight of the circular firing squad over the NSA non-scandal. It's embarrassing that so many DUers have jumped to conclusions over just one article, even as the story is still unraveling. All this garbage here comparing Obama to Bush ll and calling him a liar is not exactly what I'd expect to see on a Democratic website. If I wanted to see that type of crap, I'd go to FreeRepublic or Stormfront.

(289 posts)The NSA story has been shaking out since before President Obama was born. There are still people who think the NSA illegally withheld prior knowledge of the Sputnik launch in order to jolt Americans into joining the space race.
Besides, the bad guys are dealing with a chess master who hasn't done anything wrong. The IRS deal is already blowing up in the Tea Party and GOP's face, and there is still the little matter of war crimes hanging over Dubya, Cheney and the gang. That's not to mention the possibility that Poppy and John Poindexter could get toasted by a special prosecutor over past NSA/CIA crimes. Any cheap shot impeachment attempt by The House has minus-zero chances in The Senate and would unleash the full fury of the voters. The Republicans would get destroyed in 2014 and the Democrats would spend the next two years taxing the Koch Brothers and Romney, passing environmental and gun control legislation, and reopening Watergate, the Kennedy Assassination, IraqGate and the other unsolved Republican mysteries. By 2016 there would no Republicans left to vote for what's his name.
And just for the fun of it, every Democrat in the United States would auto-dial Boehner and Issa every 30 minutes for the rest of their lives.

(22,000 posts)But I firmly believe the Republicans are going to take a shot at it and see if they can get any disaffect Ds in the Senate to vote for a conviction. We know for a fact they can get the charges through the House, that only takes a simple majority. I think it would be near impossible to get the 67 in the Senate unless something else comes out. Given all the Faux scandals I would expect this to continue for awhile.

(24,772 posts)All the "scandals" consist of actions that are barely legal, though morally wrong (the NSA), have turned out to blow up in the face of the accusers (does the IRS "scandal" ring a bell?), or outright conspiracy theories.
The NSA flap can easily be resolved either by Congress passing legislation to repeal all or part of the Patriot Act, or challenged in court as an unconstitutional search or seizure. It seems to me as if the repukes don't want to repeal laws allowing for massive spying; they don't want Democratic Presidents, especially those who aren't 100% Caucasian, to exercise such authority.
