Mitch McConnell: We Must Rewrite The Constitution Because ‘Elections’ Haven’t ‘Worked’

Speaking on the Senate floor this morning, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) offered what may be the most concise summary of conservative constitutionalism ever spoken — America must rewrite the Constitution to force conservative outcomes because we the people consistently elect lawmakers who disagree with McConnell:

The time has come for a balanced budget amendment that forces Washington to balance its books. If these debt negotiations have convinced us of anything, it’s that we can’t leave it to politicians in Washington to make the difficult decisions that they need to get our fiscal house in order. The balanced budget amendment will do that for them. Now is the moment. No more games. No more gimmicks. The Constitution must be amended to keep the government in check. We’ve tried persuasion. We’ve tried negotiations. We’re tried elections. Nothing has worked.

(snip)

Sadly, McConnell’s deeply authoritarian plan to take away our ability to choose how we will be governed is part of a much larger conservative agenda to strip American democracy of any meaning and force conservative governance upon the American people:

(more examples where "conservatives" would prefer to not have to deal with those pesky elections to get their way...)

But I imagine that line would have gotten Mitch covered in tar and feathers back in their day.

Good thing modern Americans don't give a fuck either way, huh?

Republicans controlled congress when Clinton was president. If they all voted against it a budget could not have gotten through congress.

the Democratic legislation that was signed into law in August of 1993 didn't get rid of the 1993 deficit. Ergo, Newt Gingrich was the one that balanced the budget. If that's all the GOP has, then have at it.

That doesn't matter to some people as long as they are making their point. I think that points are stronger when they are accurate.

I happen to believe that 1993 legislation led to the good economy of the following years, one effect of which was the elimination of the deficit.

You don't have to agree of course, but the fact that you cited the 1993 deficit as an argument against it tells me that you are not being serious. No one, regardless of their feelings about that law, could expect it to retroactively wipe out the deficit.

The only reason someone would talk like that is when they are totally losing. It's the 'throw the chess board in the air' kind of desperate move because they have given up hope trying to win honorably.

The Republicans must be worse off than I thought.
