Government Shutdown History

I'm not sure if anyone posted this yet, but it's interesting to look at it in perspective to the history. These are only going back to 1976. I was way too young to remember it Carter's Administration and too young to remember the first half of Reagan's Administration.

Year Dates President Senate House

1995–1996 Dec 15-Jan 6 21 Clinton Rep Rep
1978 Sep 30 Oct 18 18 Carter Dem Dem
1977 Sep 30 Oct 13 12 Carter Dem Dem
1979 Sep 30 Oct 12 11 Carter Dem Dem
1976 Sep 30 Oct 11 10 Ford Dem Dem
1977 Oct 31 Nov 9 8 Carter Dem Dem
1977 Nov 30 Dec 9 8 Carter Dem Dem
1995 Nov 13 Nov 19 5 Clinton Rep Rep
2013 Sep 30 Ongoing 5 days Obama Dem Rep

There were nine other shutdowns, eight of which took place during Reagan's term in office and one during George HW Bush. All of those nine lasted 4 days or less with the majority only 1 or 2 days.

Carter five shutdowns 57 days
Clinton two shutdowns 26 days
Reagan eight shutdowns 14 days

Total fifteen shutdowns for 97 days
