It is not an unreasonable fear, to suppose that some 'grand bargain' on long-hinted lines may be trotted out, after a decent interval, once both a continuing resolution and the debt ceiling increase have been passed, with such passage being contingent on the understanding the 'bargain' soon will be forthcoming.

The more noise made against such a thing now the better the chance it will not come to pass. It certainly should not be done.

You will be labeled a hater.

You are entirely correct - obviously you remember recent history - that such a "grand" idea could be being considered given what came from other impasses like this one. You are also correct to be vigilant and make you voice heard beforehand. Too many prefer to think they are helping if they stand around and wait for the horses to bolt before they close the barn door.

because not only do they divert from what is actually going on in government in real life, but like one poster said--they offer ZERO evidence whatsoever that entitlements will be cut. For Chrissakes, Obama has had well over FOUR YEARS and Republicans in Congress willing to help him if he really wanted to wipe out entitlements! WTF is taking him so long?
People really have to use their heads. All this seems to be is more hyperbolic fear-mongering against a President who has seen rising poll numbers this past week, as more Americans are falling in love with Affordable Health Care. We've seen this movie before about how he was supposedly going to start another war in Syria, but guess what--it didn't happen!

Don't fool yourself: Obama got exactly what he wanted in Syria - Syria is now in ruins and neutralized as any sort of military threat to Israel, and the Saudis are happy because the Sunnis now control most of the country.

As for here, well, the federal government just got shrunk in a bathtub without anyone in the Democratic ledger having to go on record to vote directly for it, and the military is exempted from having its trousers taken in. Jitters about the Debt Ceiling aside, Wall Street is exultant about the Sequester and partial shutdown. The NASDAQ was up 7 or 8 percent in September, and the Dow has risen nearly 15% since the Sequester started.

The GOP got exactly what they wanted, and if his past statements are any indication, Obama IS willing to give them more than half of the cuts to Social Security they want.

Pentagon: Most Furloughed Civilians Ordered Back
Source: AP

The Pentagon is ordering most of its approximately 400,000 furloughed civilian employees back to work.

The decision by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is based on a Pentagon legal interpretation of a law called the Pay Our Military Act.

That measure was passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama shortly before the partial government shutdown began Tuesday.

The Pentagon did not immediately say on Saturday exactly how many workers will return to work. The Defense Department said "most" were being brought back.

people by speaking out against the vicious chained CPI and other attacks by millionaires upon the very least among us. Such a 'Grand Bargain' has often been suggested by Obama, so it is not rocket science to know that he might offer that yet again. It would be easy as breathing for Obama to take that crap off our table once and for all. He has not done so.

I'm afraid we've gotten started on the wrong foot.

My little quote had nothing to do with you. It was a description of my philosophy, not yours. It has to be taken in its entirety, not just one piece...

My country right or wrong. When it's right, keep it right. When it's wrong, make it right.

It is my absolute obligation to insist that we maintain a course of democratic (small d) principles. It is my obligation to fight for those principles. Long ago I took an oath to uphold the constitution. I have never believed that oath had an expiration date stamped on it.

I haven't forgotten what's at stake and I know exactly what he's dealing with. He is a very smart man.

So are we. Maybe he ought to start paying attention to us.

So far everytime I've been pissed at him I haven't been wrong. That doesn't mean I don't support him and want him to fail. It just means I have to speak a little louder cause he hasn't been hearing me.

BTW, I've found that the media and the WH staff pay attention to these forums...this one particularly.

30. President Obama MEANT IT when he said "Your job is to hold my feet to the fire." He NEEDS us to do
Sat Oct 5, 2013, 08:52 PM
Oct 2013

our job.

His job is NOT made easier by complacent, non-assertive "supporters" urging Americans to have faith, but by supporters who care enough about the values we share with the President to RAISE HELL in support of those values.

"Your job is to hold my feet to the fire. . . So, you need to be out there everyday raising these issues, telling us when we’re doing the right or wrong thing. . . My role is to be President of the United States. . . "

http://www.stanforddaily.com/2011/12/01/a-foot-in-two-worlds/

How could our President have been any more emphatic?

To work for the values we share with our President (including creating enough public demand that no "grand bargain" harming essential programs be made) is not to doubt our President. And to work for these shared values does NOT mean that our excellent President is a "fraud".

To assertively demand that no deal be made with Republicans that compromises essential programs STRENGTHENS THE PRESIDENTS HAND in those negotiations with Republicans. (This is especially important in an age where corporate media routine mainstreams Fox News memes. Without an assertive and demanding Democratic base, the terms of public discourse will continue to be pulled further and further to the right.)

That's the reason he told us to DO OUR JOB.

there will not be a grand bargain.

There'll be little chips.

Like Reid offering to extend the sequester funding levels in the budget. It wasn't mentioned until they needed a talking point against the accusation that the dems don't compromise.

Or the bill to unfurlough the DoD civilians and coincidentally CONTRACTORS that was passed and signed before the shutdown started. Anybody notice that the promise that there would be no piecemealing was already broken before it was made...oh, and the traffic controllers, etc.

Even tho the story of the frog in the boiling water is false...it still works.

Yep, no grand bargain.

How's them new funding streams workin out for us? How about the TPP?
