http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/10/16/republican-cant-figure-out-why-government-shutdown-shut-down-government-parks/Basic argument seems to be, "The parks and monuments are there, why do they have to be closed just because the government is shut down.?" Apparently Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) can't understand that it it takes people to maintain a park or monument. I guess he thinks rest rooms just clean themselves, trash cans empty themselves, visitors don't get sick and puke on the ground for the vets to slip on as they maneuver their walkers through the WWII memorial. Of course these are the same people who say that poor people can get health care in an Emergency Room because they don't have to pay. Logic is not a strong suit with the TP crowd.

(653 posts)......South Carolina if chock full of dumb shits. Once you get off the main streets in down town Charleston or Columbia, the state is perfectly preserved in it's 1865 condition. A largely racist, agrarian state with a few pockets of industrialization because companies that set up there had huge tax incentives thrown at them and a populace that is basically a cheap, ignorant third world work force. There's your republican social utopia for you.

(7,365 posts)I RARELY post political stuff on Facebook. Of all my friends, 10 of them post overtly right-wing shit and I have ONE that posts from our view.
but I had to respond to a guy this morning. I never use labeling (such as Conservative, right, Tea Party)...it usually defuses these folks for some reason.
"This is among the more ridiculous memes floating around Facebook. Parks were closed and barricades were erected to protect park property in the absence of park personnel normally on duty at the site to protect park property. All the rancor about "government" parks being closed (when the government itself is closed) is among the most comical fits of hysteria I think I've ever seen. I've enjoyed reading all this madness for 2 weeks now (not necessarily from you) and I don't get it, other than just manufactured outrage to point one's political adversary (in this case Barack Obama) as the devil who hates WWII vets. It is time for a new outrage from these people, maybe 'getting government out of their Medicare'."
Good one!

(8,217 posts)Don't understand what the role of government is in regards to their lives.
They forget that much of what has supported them and allows them to achieve whatever they have, has been directly related to governmental support.
Idiots.

(3,469 posts)Someone, a vet or tourist or whatever, would have had a heart attack or accident with no park employee there to help them. Then the teabaggers would have shouted "Why weren't they closed? Obama kept them open so that this would happen!!"

Of course, it's so much easier for them to stand around with a crowd of veterans decrying the shutdown that they themselves instigated than to just pass a bill re-opening the government so that people can enjoy the monuments, parks, etc.
