Related: About this forumRepublicans have it half right about Welfare...
Welfare, and similar programs, should not exist.
But, what they will not admit, is that these social programs exist to support businesses that pay below a livable wage.
This is not welfare for the poor. It is a giveaway to business. The poor are compensated by the government so that business may profit.
Business profits directly from the taxes we pay and the poor are blamed.

(45,274 posts)You're right about the sub-living wage thing, of course.
But we really ought to have a guaranteed minimum income that would replace both welfare and unemployment. I think most people would choose to work & make a higher income, and those without job prospects would be less likely to resort to desperate measures. We can afford to do this. We're rich enough. We just have to figure out how to distribute wealth better. Nobody ever seems to complain about all the rich fucks living on the proceeds of Grampa's corporate piracy.

(24,402 posts)they say they don't want people to be on welfare but then they box people in by denying them protections and failing to ensure that the "free market" pays them enough of a wage and provide enough benefits so that they don't have to turn to welfare to simply survive.
BTW Wal-Mart is the perfect example of what you are saying in your OP
