The news over the weekend for those who want to see the U.S. government actually function, was nothing short of stunning.
Headline after headline told of an outbreak of internecine warfare within the Republican Party which brought the government to its knees for the first two weeks of October.
Civil war was the term most commonly used.
We analyzed it in detail today in
GOPs internal struggle is good news for 2014
There can be no doubt a struggle has erupted for the heart and soul of the Republican Party.
For those who are NOT conservatives, this is the best possible outcome.
It may mean the Democrats romp to victory in the mid-term elections in 2014, and continue to occupy the White house in 2016.
We first reported on this possibility Oct. 3 in
Showdown over shutdown could split the Republican Party
It reached a crescendo in The New York Times on Sunday with the front page story
Fiscal Crisis Sounds the Charge in G.O.P.s Civil War.
The Money quote:
Its civil war in the G.O.P., said Richard Viguerie, a veteran conservative warrior who helped invent the political direct mail business.
A Republican civil war can only be good for the country. While they are preoccupied with their internal struggle, the electorate can watch from the sidelines and vote for the Democrats in 2014.

(15,071 posts)are on their way out after the last vote to avoid default. From what I see the GOP is moving to become the party of Louie Gohmert, Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann.

(26,117 posts)Their craven pandering to various extreme groups (tea party, religious right) could only hold for so long. It's probably too late to hope that the end result will mean a real political party with ideas (albeit conservative ones) rather than the obstruction-only party we've seen lately.

(60,318 posts)Interesting that a quote from Richard Viguerie showed up. He is one of the very few guys on the extremist right I am friendly with (long story), and while he and I both consider each other to be completely off our respective deep ends politically, we do get to dump our respective opinions on each other in a civil manner. Richard is one of the few on the radical right who knows how to "leave his guns at the door," as he puts it.
Richard is also, by the way, completely on the side of the Teabaggers, so he would be one of the ones who sees the enemy as the mainstream GOP. If he says it's war, then this means war.

(60,318 posts)It was never about a soul or any other religion except the one deity that all of the big Republicans really worship: MONEY.
That is their holy grail, and no matter how much they have, it's not enough. They still sing the line from "Magic Bus:"
"I want it, I want it, I want, I want it......."
forgot how soul-less they are!
darn.
