Chris Matthews on Christie Win: ‘Reagan Democrats Are Alive’ and ‘They Like Reality’

On Morning Joe Wednesday morning, NBC News political reporter Kasie Hunt and Hardball host Chris Matthews discussed the fallout for Democrats from Chris Christie’s commanding win in yesterday’s New Jersey gubernatorial election, with Hunt warning that the Democrats missed an opportunity to damage Christie before he begins a 2016 presidential run, and Matthews arguing that his election portended the resurgence of Reagan Democrats.

“I wonder whether Democrats are going to really start to regret how much of a pass they gave Christie in this election,” Hunt said. “You didn’t really see the party apparatus crank up for Barbara Buono…They could have dredged up some of what we’re seeing come out, the Romney vet of Chris Christie, all of these problems in his past, but they let all that go.”

“The Reagan Democrats are alive,” Matthews said. “They’re working class, middle class, mostly Catholics—I’m just saying, it’s a fact—ethnic people, people who came two or three generations ago. They tend to be very, very patriotic. And they like reality. They don’t like Al Gores. They don’t like people like [Michael] Dukakis. They want real people with blood in them. People that talk with attitude.”

“Chris, those aren’t the people are electing nationally, though,” former RNC Chairman Michael Steele. “That’s not who they are electing for president of the United States, and Chris Christie is the exception when you look at who they’re electing for governor.”

And this is coming from the zoned-out dude who surfs reality only when the, "waves are bitchin'", but who doesn't actually dwell in it on a full time basis.

The Democrats voted for him. They always set it up. Like they did with bush. I remember when Kerry lost to bush, within 3 seconds Chris said I guess the young voters didn't come out. They are setting this whole scenario up. We need to be on our toes, the Media is in on this one.

I always hate listening to the pundits break down voters into various and sundry groups and this will make it even more stomach-churning.

So, maybe the pour all kinds of money into NJ and really, really mucked it up.

Christie "only" wins 56 to 44.

Still an ass kicking.

I think he would be an extraordinarily formidable general election candidate if he gets there, cause the Rs and "liberal media" will rally around the "he will take charge in DC" meme with great fervor and that will resonate A LOT with a public that the Rs have on complete edge.

But, the reason he kills in NJ is simply cultural. NJ people just are a complete different breed, and he is a Jersey Shore guy in a Jershey Shore state.

Mathews as usual is tweaking out in some painful Freudian man crush on a bully type male. But, his larger spin is basically taken from the reality of Christie's situation.

He only likes the the kind of politicians you can have a beer with. He longs for days of smoke filled back rooms with fat, old White guys smoking cigars, telling dirty jokes, and bragging about how they're banging some secretary or coat check girl. Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry types don't fit that mold.

Pay no attention to what that ass kissing sycophant thinks. He still trying to work through the time he wasn't allowed in the tree house for being a sissy or got kicked out of the varsity locker room for being creepy.

I still can't believe he had any positive feelings for George W. Bush.
