The 6 GOP Governors Democrats Hope To Unseat In 2014
Democratic Governors Associations Chairman Peter Shumlin (D) told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor-sponsored meeting on Thursday that Democrat Terry McAuliffe's victory in this week's Virginia gubernatorial election is spurring Democrats to go on the offensive in 2014.
"These are the states that I'm optimistic about for the reason that these governors have done exactly what Cuccinelli has done," he said, referring to Democratic governor-elect Terry McAuliffe's narrow win over Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R).
Below is the ambitious list of governorships Shumlin said Democrats want to retake from the GOP: ...

(753 posts)In Florida might be rough, because you know they will attack Crist with everything they have. Ohio will probably be the same.

(40,416 posts)1. Wisconsin. Scott Walker.
2. Pennsylvania. Tom Corbett.
3. Florida. Rick Scott.
4. Ohio. John Kasich.
5. Michigan. Rick Snyder.
6. Maine. Paul LePage.
And, in an update to the report...
7. South Carolina. Nikki Haley.
TPM has commentary on each case. Worth a click through.

(22,000 posts)I think 1-6 has a strong shot and are winnable. South Carolina I think it would be more likely to see someone from the right primary Haley and beat her than a D winning.
I believe once McAuliffe takes office it will be 29-21 Rs for governor. Picking off those six would make it 27-23 Ds.

(9,791 posts)He has ticked off enough people across party lines that I think it's do-able. He has damaged the GOP brand in PA but he won't budge. This should be good news for the Democrats who have several potential candidates lined up. This will be one to watch.

Interesting info in the list on the link above.
Three of the Republican governors sworn in January 2011 had 'No prior public experience': Rick Scott, Rick Snyder, and Susana Martinez.
IF we were to unseat all 7 republicans listed up in the OP article - plus if Wendy wins Perry's seat in Texas (and McAullife-VA will be added Jan 2014) - then we'd flip the majority ....
... and we'd end up having a total of 29 Democrats and 21 Republicans January 2015

(23,152 posts)I'd also love to take out Brownback in Kansas, but that'll be a tough nutcase to crack. The Koch boys have a little more cash than I do these days......

(50,528 posts)Jan Brewer, Wingnut of AZ. The state is winnable by a Democrat.
I'd also like to see Truck Stop Bill Haslam (he was CEO of the biggest truck stop chain in America before becoming governor) of Tennessee go, but that's iffy - he won pretty solidly in 2010.

(2,004 posts)Everyday that man stays in office is another day of disaster capitalism for Ohio. His privatized jobs plan aka as RobsOhio is stealing billions of dollars of state tax money. Operations as simple as highway maintenance have been taken over by the epically incompetent. Our schools are being looted to send billions of dollars into the hands of corrupt "business" people like David Brennan at White Hat for failing charter schools. The government employees I know are aghast at the level of incompetence and corruption in this administration. It will take decades to repair the damage this man and his corrupt cronies have done to Ohio.
The latest scam is the "investment" otherwise known as theft) of 50 million dollars from the Ohio State University with Kasich's pal Mark Kvamme's brand new investment fund by the outgoing and disgraced university president Gordon Gee. The university's own investment expert refused, but was overruled and or coerced to go along.
He gets little national attention for his massive level of corruption. His medicare expansion scam was praised in the MSM while being a massive fail for the citizens of Ohio. It will only be expanded for two years and then will be stopped because it was done through the Ohio Controlling Board rather than passed through the legislature. It may well be overturned in court as it may not be allowed under the state constitution. Kasich is extraordinarily cynical and may well be the biggest psychopath in politics since Dick Cheney. He is a very dangerous man who is given a pass by the national media for some strange reason.
Kasich is a crook and is getting away with it. We can only hope the citizens wake up and vote this criminal out of office along with his fellow crooks, Husted the Secretary of Voter Suppression and Josh Mandel the most corrupt and incompetent auditor ever installed in office in Ohio and Mike DeWine the worst Attorney General ever.

(12,296 posts)...if the Dems can come up with a really charismatic and populist candidate. Pence has been a milquetoast on just about every issue (or, should I say NO issue because he hasn't done SQUAT except ribbon cuttings since he got elected) & I can see the TeaBagger contingent - with whom the stupid is extra STRONG in this state - trying to 'primary' him or run a Nutbag from the far-right.
