2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum(Beware!) Mark Halperin: 'Chris Christie is Someone Who is Magical'
It's going to take a whole lot more than magic for the Villagers' new anointed one, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, to change the Republican party. As much as the pundits in the media want to pretend that Christie is some sort of moderate, that's not going to change the fact that he's actually a hardcore conservative, a right-wing bully and a jerk.
Nicole warned us yesterday before these shows aired that we were going to see a coronation of Christie taking place and boy was she right. Here's an example of the slobbering from this Sunday's Meet the Press:

Here comes the Hardcore propaganda that Chris Christie is the appointed one by the MSM..........
Just like G W Bush!

(46,416 posts)toward Christie as soon as he (expectedly) won re-election? In other words, they had their narratives written and ready to go? So weird. I can't figure out what the guy did to deserve this sort of fawning. If he won some R primaries, I could understand the attention, but..."magical"? WTF?

(14,564 posts)that is the meme.
It will be the 2016 version of the guy would like to have a beer with.
It works on almost every level. Rs have turned Washington DC into a steaming piles of shit, and everyone has had it with congress. But, even though it is the republicans being massive jackasses, it simply is "all of them" for republican's and the mushy middle.
His brashness, his overbearing nature, his popping off on people will be made OK because "THIS IS WHAT WE NEED IN DC!"

(2,004 posts)The love fest for Christie is a huge puzzlement. Who are his real backers? The NJ Democratic Party must have some very corrupt and powerful individuals who are getting favors from Christie. I am completely astonished how easily he won in NJ. I heard Barbara Buono speak several times on TV and she is quite articulate and progressive. I was tremendously impressed by her. I am disgusted that she did not get the support she deserved from the Democratic Party.

(9,600 posts)the Governor Romney's team looked at him (Chris Christie) really closely for vice president. They looked at a series of things that are in the public record, but that most people in national politics don't know, the fact that for a period of time he was a lobbyist, and a lobbyist for the Securities industry association when it was run by Bernie Madoff, the fact that Justice Department inspector general investigated him for expense account abuse and was very critical of him.

(63,912 posts)we will watch christie's presidential aspirations disintegrate in slo-mo over the next few years...

(14,564 posts)First, any republican gets about a half dozen jackassery's for free.
They do and say all sorts of shit and it MIGHT be an issue in the moment, but it never really gets held against them.
They have to be McCain, Romney, Cuccinelli bad to lose elections.
I mean, Romney made gaffe, after gaffe, after gaffe and he was overtaking BO because of one off debate when the 47% tape, thankfully, broke his back.
There is a meme that Christie fits. He is the brash, taking no shit, successful (where he is or not won't matter, he is a republican so like W, he will be a successful) governor who is going to go to DC and take charge.
A LOT can happen over the next three years, but right now, the only person who can beat him in a general election would be Hillary.
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)But you are right about Hillary. She will blast him out of the water. Warren could, too, because it's her core message, but I'm not sure she would have the broad support that Hillary can get around her candidacy. As a surrogate for Hillary, tho, Warren could be a real asset. She could really challenge him on his Wall St. connections. I could see him start to decompensate in a debate with her...start snarling and waving his finger in her face...just what his handlers will fear...that's what just might happen...
People don't like being lied, too, except for republicans.
Again, they simply have a different, much LOWER standard.
I like Warren a lot, but she would get killed in a presidential general election against most any R.
Sorry, the Rs and media would gore/Kerry/Dean her to oblivion.
She is what WE want to see - someone who is going to take on big money.
But, again, the country simply does not share our clear vision on that.

(63,912 posts)Damnit, we've gotta do this! I think a lot of the country DOES like our stand, look at the women, immigrant, black, gay voting block. They are ALL ours. WE can do this. We just have to try harder with the right team...
LOVE the enthusiasm!
