Joe Lieberman, who once promised he’d never become a lobbyist, becomes a lobbyist

The former Connecticut senator in 2012: "I'm not going to lobby"

ELIAS ISQUITH

About a year ago, Joe Lieberman promised — twice — that he’d never become a lobbyist.

On Wednesday, Joe Lieberman registered to become a lobbyist.

According to a report from Politico, Lieberman registered to lobby on behalf of a Libyan politician. While the law holds that Lieberman cannot personally lobby lawmakers until 2015, there’s nothing stopping Lieberman from providing strategic insight and consultation for those who are able to directly lobby.

What that means is that while Lieberman cannot personally call up lawmakers and advocate on behalf of his client, he can direct other lobbyists on whom to call and how to present their case. As MSNBC’s Steve Benen put it, “Lieberman can’t say, ‘Let me call the chairman of the committee for you and tell him about your work.’ He can say, ‘You should call the chairman of the committee and tell him I referred you.’”

I am happy that I was part of the Dem Party in CT that threw Joe out, preventing him to run for re-election in 2006 on the Dem Party line and running Ned Lamont instead. I volunteered for Ned's campaign as a lowly phone bank caller. It has enraged me to hear Joe call himself an "independent Democrat." What nerve!

... for nominating Ned Lamont, and I question the wisdom of "serious" Democrats who supported that other guy who formed his own party just so he could run against the Democrat.

This move of his does not surprise me.

Not that I had a big role. I didn't. But it was a great time to be a progressive Democrat and I was happy to work for Ned as a "foot soldier" canvassing and making phone calls. Sometimes you have to stand up and say "Enough!"

All the big-name Democrats who came out in support of their "friend" who was running against the real Democrat should be ashamed.

Glad you stood up for the party's values.

If I was a democratic senator and he called me, I'd hang up and tell him to call those in the "Lieberman for Connecticut" party.

looks out for Joe. As a Democrat he ran as Gore's VP in 2000, when Gore lost he became an Independent to play both sides of the aisle, endorsed John McCain and bad mouthed the Democrats for years. Too slick for my taste .

did his best to make Dick Cheney look like a reasonable man and then jumped ship as soon as he could while the vote count was still in question. Remember how he refused to relinquish his Senate seat while running for Veep?

The selection of Lieberman as a running mate was one of Gore's biggest mistakes in that ill-fated "centrist" campaign. Even with all of those mistakes, Gore still won the actual election.

The ONLY good thing about the 2000 "selection" was that Lieberman was never able to become a realistic Presidential candidate afterwards - even though he was outraged by Howard Dean and anyone else who "dared" to challenge his presumptive "rightful heir" status in the 2004 primaries.

I truly loathe Lieberman.
