2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI think I scored some point with my Republican husband today
We were talking about a friend of his and how he is very depressed and can't afford, or want, to do anything. He works for a county in Florida. There have been no wage increases since 2008 and it was announced recently that wages are frozen indefinitely. The man is engaged to be married. I read that medical insurance is now up to $1,000 a month for a family. I don't know what the deductible is now, but for a single individual it was $3,500 a month. Back before I quit last August, Rick Scott passed an executive order saying that ALL State of Florida employees must contribute 3% of their salaries to the Pension Plan. While a judge declared that illegal for current state workers, the State of Florida came back and said they spent the money and could not return the funds. Even the good, Faux news watching husband, said that was despicable. "It's THEIR MONEY", was he quote.
My husband also mentioned that his private employer insurance is GOING WAY UP this year. He pays $125 a month just for himself, with a $2,500 deductible. Hello? Under Obama care, insurance companies could not charge more by ZIP CODE, as in FLORIDA. My daughter in NY works in the private sector and pays $50 a month of health insurance (soups to nuts) with NO DEDUCTIBLE. but Florida has no STATE INCOME TAX. Duh? Unless you have a lot of money to begin with, all these other costs will more than make up the difference.
Maybe I should keep on working on my husband. When you give him real, actual, living people's situations, he can understand it. Why can't he see that in his case, too, that Romney and their agendas are against HIS own interests as a Senior who has a very, very limited 401K, will need Social Security and Medicare. Just because when you were YOUNG, you thought the Republicans represented your interests, it doesn't mean that they will NOW meet your interests.
Maybe I will try to work on him, and harp on REAL INDIVIDUAL life experiences, including OURS, and our children.

(15,189 posts)Are they set for life, or if SSI and Medicare go bye bye, will he be able to afford helping them? Ending many of these programs will have a bleek future for a lot of families who can't afford to help themselves let alone their parents too.
