2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumInterview with descendants of the famed Daniel Boone, and Tea Party members on Obamacare
A few years ago during the heat of the healthcare debate, I attended a Tea Party event in Houston, TX at Just-A-Bar pub.
I wrote the following then,
All attendees were friendly, engaged, and welcoming. One issue that stood out was the disdain for the government. In the various interviews I did as well as the taping of the event, I tried to ascertain if this disdain in their view was post election of Obama or otherwise.
These men interviewed are descendants of the famous Daniel Boone we all saw on TV. That the distrust of the government would lead well meaning citizens to campaign against a healthcare policy that given their own current lack of healthcare coverage would be extremely beneficial to their health and economic well being is incredulous. This is the level of what could only be considered an irrational distrust for a government when one cannot overtly see any negative effect this administration is having on these citizens either materially or socially.
Though to many on the left this may seem like irrational paranoia, it is something that should be addressed lest these people's psyche continue to make themselves feel caged and marginalized. This is a common human behavior when any group feel themselves under attack however real or imagined.

In revisiting these interviews it is ironic that inasmuch as the results of Obamacare are net positive the current Tea Party has not changed. They have actually hunkered down in their diminishing numbers. One can only hope that as President Obama has said many times, the fever will pass.
