2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumJon Stewart and Tavis Smiley tonight.
Really good. Heart-stopping. See it if you can.*
*Smiley just wrote a book about MLK and said if he were alive today he would be disappointed in Pres Obama's actions with re-engaging militarily in the middle east.
I myself think Obama is lying to himself, along with us, about the adviseability of this course of action. It goes against his character, he'll regret it some day, and it will do no good in the long run.
You might ask what do I suggest? I don't really know. There must be more options than only military. And being in more of a support role than a leadership role. It's their damn neighborhood. They have to take responsibility for cleaning it up. I'm sure they're laughing all the way to the bank. They got us good. By the short ones.
I'm sick of this going to war shit.

(24,724 posts)Why does the US need to be out front on this? Does not make sense to me. The countries in the neighborhood there should take care of this, as they are the main targets. Are they really going to succeed, these air strikes? Remember whack-a-mole? We are NOT going to destroy terrorism. THAT's naive!
Jon Stewart speaks for me.

(24,724 posts)is not entirely Pres Obama's.
I don't believe he believes in it. His delivery was wooden, and think he is sickened by it. I'm not saying I don't think he believes in doing it on some level, but I think he is being pressured into it. Obviously.

(27,787 posts)And as for Syria ... you might want to consider what Obama said to McCain about going after OBL in Pakistan.
He said if he had the right intel, and pakistan was unable or unwilling to help, he'd go in. And he did exactly that.
Here, I suspect that if he thinks specific targets in Syria can be hit and that would significantly degrade ISIL, he'll do it. But there again, he won't knee-jerk it.

Iraq actually ASKED for help.
Now, if we had sent 150,000 troops for an extended occupation, that would be a knee-jerk response.
