Alaska governor race - Walker-Mallott campaign still on ballot after judge's decision

An Alaska Superior Court judge Friday morning denied a complaint brought by a Republican Party official that could have unraveled the “unity” ticket of gubernatorial candidate Bill Walker and his running mate Byron Mallott.

Steve Strait, an Anchorage district chair of the Alaska Republican Party, had argued that Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell erred in issuing an emergency regulation earlier this month that allowed Walker to run for governor with Mallott on a “nonparty” ticket.

Strait had argued that voters who had chosen Mallott as the Democratic nominee for governor in the Aug. 19 primary election were disenfranchised when Mallott and Hollis French abandoned the Democratic ticket, and Mallott was allowed to join forces with Walker. Strait also argued, among other things, that no emergency warranted such a blatantly political decision, one that meant to merge candidates from two losing tickets to seriously challenge the Republican choice for governor and lieutenant governor, Gov. Sean Parnell and Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan.

Strait said immediately after the decision, issued in an Anchorage courtroom, that he needed time weigh Judge John Suddock’s points before deciding whether he will appeal the decision to the state Supreme Court. With more than 2,300 ballots already sent to overseas and military voters, that appeal must come quickly.

They think they are so entitled to make the rules and call the shots. I like that they are being stymied despite their big money donor advantage.
