Top Democrats Suspect Republicans Try To Sabotage Economy To Hurt Obama

WASHINGTON -- Are Republican lawmakers deliberately stalling the economic recovery to hurt President Barack Obama's re-election chances? Some top Democrats say yes, pointing to GOP stances on the debt limit and other issues that they claim are causing unnecessary economic anxiety and retarding growth.

The latest Democratic complaint came after House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday that when Congress raises the nation's borrowing cap in early 2013, he will again insist on big spending cuts to offset the increase. Boehner, R-Ohio, continues to reject higher tax rates, which Democrats demand from the wealthy.

That led Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to say Boehner is virtually assuring another debt-ceiling crisis as bad or worse than the one that shook financial markets nine months ago.

"The last thing the country needs is a rerun of last summer's debacle that nearly brought down our economy," Schumer said in a statement. In an interview, Schumer added: "I hope that the speaker is not doing this because he doesn't want to see the economy improve, because what he said will certainly rattle the markets."

"suspecting" this? Two years later than many of us? And the teabaggers plan to prevent the debt ceiling from being raised again if they don't get their way? So S&P will downgrade us further? We better take back the House or we're screwed so badly i doubt we can recover.

They can't just come out and state the bleeding obvious, that Republicans are deliberately wrecking the economy in order to defeat Obama. That would be "biased", so it has to become something that "top Democrats suspect".

No wonder so many in the world think most America's are dumb.

for Ds to not just state the simple truth on this?

EVERY D congressman/senator, every pundit the "liberal media" puts in front of the camera, the first words out of their mouths should be "repubilcans have been actively working against the economic recovery of America for political gain ..."

It is the SIMPLE TRUTH, and the gimme response to questions is Mitch McConnell's statement about making President Obama a one term president ...

Heck, when what few Ds voted against Bush's disasterous tax cuts, every r on the planet was screaming this ...

Just exasperating.

Rs, even when flat, dead wrong, play it strong, 100 percent.

Conservatives believe in the wrong remedy for economic problems. Their "sabotage" is actually what they genuinely believe in: Cuts in food stamps, austerity, no or little stimulus, etc. That's why W. Bush messed up the economy and that's why Democrats are better at handling the nation.

If Romney comes to power, the economy will become much worse, you bet. It won't mean the Republicans are sabotaging it.

For example, when gwbushco was president, government spending and hiring when way up. gwbushco also did a stimulus, and certainly did not take any austerity measures. bushco did every thing possible to prop up the economy.

I think there is less true belief and more calculation on how they want to win back the White House.

And, IMO the only reason the repubs go for the low-hanging fruit of food stamps, welfare, etc, is because they know it 1. creates divisions among the electorate instead of focusing on their real agenda, and 2. the poor have no lobby, no way to fight back.

The want what works for them, not the economy.

Yes, they have come to believe the crape they spew, but make no mistake, they full well know that cutting the hundreds of thousands of government employees they are responsible for over the last few yearsare serving the purpose of keeping unemployment at a higher level than it should be, the big hammer they keep hitting our president with ...

Our republican governor and controlled house/senate passed the weakest natural gas law in the country while balancing the budget with about a billion dollars in cuts to education at the HS and college level. Some school districts were fine, some have had to cut a couple hundred employees - same with the universities.

There has been a slight increase in private sector jobs - the thing that is keeping unemployment as high as it is is public sector job losses - almost universally driven by republicans.

They believe their cut taxes for the rich and they will create jobs BS, but they are not stupid enough to not know that math.

HTF ANY public sector employee can vote republican is beyond me, and I know A LOT of them ... But, that is like any one of the countless groups of people they make political hay on who good portions of them manage to vote republican ...

The GOP members of Congress have talked the economy down so much, you would think they had placed money betting that we would not ever recover.

The Republicans in Congress are betting against the American people!!!
